Bass pedals for an acoustic

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Fri Dec 30, 2005 3:10 am

So ever since i saw Howie Day i have been intreagued by his setup. I already have a dl-4 and have been messing around on that witht he layering stuff. I have been thinking about buying that boss distortion pedal to see if i can get some good distortion sound with my acoustic (because i will be using my acoustic guitar, i dont even own an electric..). Another thing i saw Howie do was put down a bass line when he was messing around on the DL-4 adding layers. Does anyone know what peadal he was using to get the bass sound on his acoustic? Can anyone reccommend a cheap pedal that will get my acoustic putting out a bass sound?

Howie uses the Boss OC-2, which has been discontinued. It drops the notes he's playing one octave to resemble a bass.

Boss now has out the OC-3, which, unlike the OC-2, can process full chords played through it if you want to. I don't know if you're going to find anything other than the Boss that is worth a damn. If you don't care about chords/power chords, a used OC-2 would do you just fine.

Also, if you're thinking of distortion, I recommend the Boss Blues Driver. I have it and use it on my acoustic, and you can get all kinds of great sounds from it.

I played my acoustic through a simple Boss DS-1 pedal, just simple distortion, and to be honest with you, it sucked. All I could get was rough, grainy distortion, there was zero flexibility. I can't testify to any others, but if you're lookin' for just distortion, stay away from the Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal for your acoustic. Isn't it ironic?

What kind of pickup did you have? Because i've run my taylor with the fishman pickup through the DS-1 and it sounded fine. I think its going to depend on your pickup.

i would get a bass but my plan is to be able to do all this live and solo so i dont want to have to worry about putting the acoustic down and picking up a bass right in the middle of a song.

Octave pedals sound awful.

i can get a 100 dollar fender bass to sound better than any guitar through an octave pedal. it's just the nature of it. effects are gross and cheesy.
