Both play very well.
The '98 has the Fishman blender and the '03 the ES (obviously).
The '98 is cedar/rosewood (IIRC) and the '03 is sitka/rosewood.
Which would you choose ... Both are priced at $1325.
I know it's personal preference but I was hoping for feedback on cedar tops as I hear the wood is very soft and prone to damage from extended use.

Cedar is a softer wood than sitka spruce, however I think it sounds much better, but that's complete personal preference. It's got a warmer sound to it... More balanced IMO. Great for strumming or fingerpicking, while sitka is more suited for strumming.
My first high end guitar will have a cedar top... if it's not all walnut.
I'd go for the 714

I have a 714 LTD, and I love it (it has a cedar top). It is more responsive to fingerstyle (IMO isn't for the hard strummer though, I mean light/medium sounds great, but not to strum hard). Also I've seen that 414 just sold on the AGF, and is already being sold again (not sure what the story is, but I would be a little skeptical if somebody is already selling it again). the 414 may be great, but I would at least look into why its being sold so quickly.

I'm going down to play it ... I think the guy bought it on impulse but he's also having family problems so he may need the bling.EnFuego wrote:I have a 714 LTD, and I love it (it has a cedar top). I don't fingerstyle at all so I guess the 714 is out.
Thanks for the tip man, you saved me another trip

others may have other opinions on it, but that is my take (and the guy that sold it to me told me that it was a "fingerstyle guitar" too). I think that cedar is generally used more in fingerstyle playing (James Taylor's Olson has cedar top).charliemike wrote:I'm going down to play it ...
