testing new guitars

Just curious here. What kinds of songs do you guys (and some girls) play when testing for a new guitar, and what are the best things to play to compare like the tones of different guitars.

What I do is improv a bit, then play some kind of hard rock song on it, then play something classical like Jesu, Joy of a Man's Desiring to see how it sounds. Then maybe even jam out on some dave.

If it sounds good for all of that, then I like it. But my way of testing guitars is not necessarily the best way.

Stairway to Heaven. The only true test of a guitar or guitarist.

Just play different kinds. Blues, jazz, simple chords, whatever you feel.

I play what I'm going to play on it.

Dave, Live, Counting Crows, etc if it's acoustic.

If it's an electric, then it's different scales.

Well, I start off with basic chord shapes to make sure that all the strings ring through, and that it has an even sound when played open. Then I'll play some power and barr chords to make sure that I don't get any buzzing, and that it's easy to fret the barr. Then I'll try some muted Dave chords, i.e. Billies, and Crush to make sure that despite the muted sound it still sounds rich.

Then I'll go to playing some of the songs I wrote to make sure that the guitar complimente my style. Also if it's an electric acoustic make sure you plug it in, because some sound better/worse plugged in.

first i think a visual check is good. Take the guitar and look down the neck and in the sound hole to make sure everything looks ok. Then play what you know. I mean If you have played billies a 1000 times (like im sure many of us have) then play that because you know how it is sposta sound.

I think this is the best way.
