Patch/Mic to Computer

Unread post by globex » Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:27 pm

I have a guitar, a microphone and an Apple Notebook. I want to record stuff with my microphone, however, I need one of those boxes, such as the MBox. My question is, what would be the best purchase for me. I don't need any fancy sound boards or anything, I just need something that I can plug my microphone jack in. Also, any ideas on the price of something like this?

We're going to need some more information. Are you looking to just plug into the soundcard? Do you have a budget? What sort of bus interfaces (USB, Firewire) do you have?

Im looking to plug into anything. I dont know if a soundboard is the way to go, probably makes sense to plug into the soundboard...

My budget is preferably under $100.

I have both USB and Firewire.

If you don't want anything fancy you could just get a iMic ( http://www.griffintechnology.com/produc ... /index.php )

That doesn't look like it has a microphone cord input. I need something I can plug this kind of thing into:

Alirght, just FYI, that's an XLR ouput. If this mic is a condensor mic, you need something that provides phantom power to make it work. Nothing in your budget will do USB recording and provide phantom power. If you have a dynamic mic, though, that's no problem.

Given that, you have two options.

M-Audio Fast Track USB

IF you can go up to $150, the M-Audio MobilePre USB is much better than those two.

As slimerdmb24 said that is a XLR Connector and you could get a XLR to 1/8" adapter although your connection will now not be balanced (XLR is balanced and the 1/8" is not) but I don't think you will hear a difference. and you also cant as slimerdmb24 also said use a condenser mic with it.

Related: for under $200, what's my best bet for a USB device? My laptop is NOT firewire capable, and I'll be using a dynamic mic, so I'll have no need for phantom power. XLR or 1/4", I have multiple cables, including female XLR to 1/4", so input on a USB device isn't an issue. Thanks for the input, I'll be shopping soon, but there are so many cheap USB devices out there, I'd hate to get a piece of shit.

Edit: I use Cool Edit Pro ver 1.2, in case anyone was wondering. Maybe old-school, but hey, it works for me. We fear change. :D

Buy a mixer and your problems are solved. You can get cords that connect your mixer into your sound card input.

All the recording software have mixers now, so buying a mixer sounds totally pointless. No?

Sound card noise, forgot to mention that. I'm looking for a USB box because plugging directly into my sound card, there's a huge amount of sound card noise. Even if I'm recording in the software program with nothing plugged in, it's ridiculous. Hence looking for a USB box. :D

Anyone have any experience with the M-Audio MobilePre USB unit? That's right in my price range, and from the looks of it, has just about all I need. Thanks again.

It is very good. Without a doubt the best box anywhere near that range. Multichannel, Phantom Power, made by M-Audio. It is a quality product.
