My first Guitar Try-outs...

Unread post by billywestom » Tue Apr 22, 2003 2:07 am

I am driving down to Guitar Center today (Tuesday) to try out some guitars.

This will be the first time since I got my current guitar (about 1 1/2 years ago) that I will play anything else. I am going to start going down regularly to try them out, as I am starting to save money for a nice one. I figure I will buy something when I get to about $2000.

I have about $675 saved up now, but I still have my bass, amp, and case to sell (or probably get store credit) and I will get whatever I can for my current guitar. I figure I should get about $300 or so for the bass setup and probably $80 - $100 for my guitar (I am not sure, I've never traded in before).

Also, my birthday is next month and my grandma is a sucker for birthdays (sorry grandma), so probably $150 there.

I'll just have to wait and see what other money comes up until fall quarter starts at school (Financial Aid, Baby!!!).

I'm telling you all this because I will give some reviews of the guitars I play when I get back, so if you are interested...

Does anyone know of any good guitar places in the KC area, we had a MARS like 5 minutes from my house but they went out of business, we have some small local stores, but all they sell is Tak's Ibanez, and one has Seagull, but I would like to go try som Taylor's or Martins.
I think people think that maybe theres more chance I'll play if they sound mad and I'm like you guys are just pretending, I know why you go to the gym its for the steam room big boy, come in here with that '41' stuff, I see through that tiger DM 3-19

Ok im back...

The guitars i saw most were definitely martins. there were many ovation, cort, ibanez, larivee, alvarez, fender, and taylors. I played nearly all the martins and certainly all of the taylors. i dont remember all of them, but here's what i think:

Taylor 314ce - this was $1160, which i dont know, it didnt seem bad. the sound is definitely good, and the body is beautiful.

Taylor 514ce - I loved the look of this guitar. This was right in my price range (eventually), about $2200.

Taylor 814ce - Definitely the nicest taylor, of course, it was about $2700.

Unfortunately, there weren't any 900 series. the guy said "usually all they trust us with is anything up to the 800's"

Martin HD-28V - This was ok I guess, i would prefer the sound of the taylors over this one. I think this was like $2500 or something (not sure)

Martin HD-35 - the guy told me this was the best deal in the store. the list price for this is about $3300, and it was for sale for $1900, which is PERFECT. I would bet that i may be getting this guitar. The martins definitely have a bassier sound, which sounds really cool.

Martin 12-string (dont know exact name). this was the first 12 string i have ever played, and boy do they sound nice. it sounds like a full band playing or something.

I played many others, like the D-35 (Timmy!), the D-28, DX, DM, etc. They all sound nice, but im not gonna get into all that.

Im in no way an expert on the sound of a guitar. the taylors overall I think have a nicer sound (if the taylors have a 100% "A" grade, then the Martins would have a 95% )

The martins feel much smoother when playing, as far as the neck and the sliding on the fretboard.

I will be going down again shortly to play again.

p.s. everyone was lookin at me funny cause all i was playing was dave...

LOL good for you, show em some Dave. For the person that posted the guitar stores, thanks. I did some research today too, I got a certified Martin dealer like 15 mins away and a Taylor dealer like 20, not as nice as that Mars that was both and only 5, but it will do, I am goin to the on closest to me tomorrow night.

Oh yeah, a couple things that I forgot...I played a Martin Backpacker...those things are a joke.

Secondly, I played a few Gibsons, and I am surprised at how bad they sound compared to the others. One was the "Hummingbird" which was like $2200 and I didnt think it was that great at all.
