Gibson Melody Maker

Has anybody tried the Gibson melody maker? I hear it is good but I am not sure?

Haven't tried the new ones, but my dad has a '66 model with single coils and a trem, it's sweeeeeeeet.

I have never played one of these before, but it seems like there would be better deals out there if you are looking for a solid electric in that price range.
