get timmy's guitar, you said you like his playing, he is a genius and im sure he wouldnt play a guitar that didnt suit his playing perfectly. and after looking at his hands, you should be able to play anythign he plays.

the HD-28 is a better guitar overall...more bass response, more volume, lighter overall feel, scalloped braces, and a more comfortable non-bound fingerboard...but it depends on your style, being strummer, flatpicker, or fingerstyle, then non of those guitars are for you...

just keep A-Bing them until you decide...one cool trick I used to buy my 714 versus the 914 was that I had a buddy of mine (similar guitarist) played them for me with my back turned toward him...when he played both guitars, the 714 rocked it, being louder and warmer than the 914, turned out, in my case, that the $1200 more in visual appointments on the 914 wasn't worth it...

then used the other $1200 toward an HD-28...

i feel like ive played a dud, because when i played an HD-28 it was nothing like any of you described. it was kinda cheap feeling, very little volume, althuogh there was the bass response.

it kinda felt like i was playing one of the smaller bodied ovations... eww.

i havent said it in a while, but breedlove.

Were you using Medium gauge strings on the HD-28...lots of people tend to string Dreds with Light guage strings, and mediums make all the difference in blasting out good tone and volume...

But ya know, every guitar is different, and NO two guitars sound alike. You might play 2 HD28's side by side and hear differences between them...this is why I never buy a guitar sight unseen or sound unheard. Others may differ though, because if the price is right and you like the guitar, you may never "hear" the difference.

But like I said, keep playing them, but my honest bias goes to the HD28, it really is a staple of the Martin guitar line...

im definitely in the same boat. im buying a martin a hd-28v hd-28 or d-35 i ruled out the hd-28v cause the neck is too thick, i liked it for chords but then tried playing some other songs not all chords like rheginos and v neck didn't work for me. so then between hd-28 and d-35 and i think im going with d-35 sounds better to me, i bid on this one but i didn't win (1995 limited d-35.. headstock like daves.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1 ) so i vote d-35!

I love the D-35, and also the HD-35. Check them both out an awful lot and i'm sure you'll come up with the right decision

ummmmmmm i think its pretty ignant' to say any version of a 28 'sucks' compared to any guitar. If you like the 35 more however, there is no problem with that.

I think i am going to go with the HD-28. just as loud, more balanced. 35 is sweet, but the bass has been drowning out the treble for the most part.
