I was at a local concert and the electric guitar player had this little black thing a little bigger than a slide and rectangular and he would hold it up to the stings and they would rattle. I think it was emiting some sort of pulse or something to make the strings shake. What was that thing? Where can i get one? I thought it was cool, never seen anything like it before.

yes. he has bass e-bow, im pretty sure they make them seperate because the ebow the guy at church had only worked on the g-string of my friends bass, and he uses small strings too.

im not sure how exactly it works, maybe someone here has more information, you can also check it out. (google e-bow for the site.) I think it has a magnet in it where if you place it correctly over the strings, it will vibrate that string

"The principal is simple: a focused feedback loop directed at a single string. This produces a powerful, infinite sustain, rich in harmonics for incredible guitar sounds. It's like amplifier feedback with greater control and predictability, at any volume, even through headphones. This hand-held synthesizer provides an amazing variety of textures and tonal slurs — virtually an instrument in itself!"

Ah google, how I love thee: http://www.ebow.com/ebow/brochure.htm

Pearl Jam/Eddie uses it too sometimes, like in some versions of wishlist and a few others.
