Looking for some Martin/Elderly advice
Looking for some Martin/Elderly advice
Whats up people, im a friend of Kanters from college and im new to posting on this site. Sorry in advance for this being a long post.
Ive been playing the same crappy Yamaha for around 12 years now, and while its a piece of crap, i must say its held up pretty well until now. Its time has come, AKA, i have money, and im going to buy a Martin. I am a decent player, and my fingers, and everyone else's ears deserve this upgrade.
Im looking to spend between $1300-$1500, and it seems Elderly is giving me the most for my money.
1) Who here has purchased a guitar from Elderly? Any warnings/praisings i can hear? I am kind of nervous to buy something like a martin without actually seeing the one im getting before hand.
2) Im pretty much set on the DC-16RGTEP
http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/ ... 6RGTEP.htm
Love the rosewood, love the cutaway, love the price, they will give it to me for $1260. However the DC-16RGTE AURA is also nice. http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/ ... 6RGTEA.htm Anyone know details on the AURA system? i can get this for $1379. is it worth the money for the upgrade in electronics?
Ive played both, love them, and i am pretty much set on them. However, any recommendations in my price range? I wont get a 3 series Taylor over these martins, and other Taylors are too much $$$.
Thanks Ladies

I dont like that microphone just sitting in the sound hole on that first pic. Elderlys is normally a really good site to get guitars from though. Try http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com/ and compare prices. If youve played a lot of Martins (and other guitars) in your price range, and youve found the one that you want then I dont know what advice to really give you. Except I wouldnt really worry about buying online from a respectable site from elderlys or bb's.

dmbtabs, welcome to it.
I dont know who it was, maybe kahn, but someone was posting a link of an online store that will match any online price. I know filmy posted some smart ass thing in there, i think it was a thread about the epiphone chet, but i cant remember.
regardless, if someone wants to link that thread or site if you knwo what im talkign about, it sounded liek that and the other site mentioned int he thread would be good places to look.
And as far as the guitar, I have never even strumemd a martin, i have an inferiority complex about my playing and would feel like if i even took one off a wall at a guitar store and played it i wouldnt do it the justice it deserves
but i don't know about getting a cutaway, its all personal preferance, but when I think of martins, i think standard body dread. I dunno, just play as many as you can to make sure you are getting the one you want.
best of luck.

And another thing, are you set on getting a new Martin? Used is really the way to go because you can get more guitar for the money (or the same guitar for less, whichever way you look at it) and the second you buy a new guitar it is worth as much as a used one. I know you can get used D-28's for about the price of that rosewood D-16 you are looking at, but it wont have cutaway or electronics. But hey, its a D-28. (or a D-35)
I see elderly has a couple of D-28's asking in the 1,300-1,400 range, and of course you could get it cheaper than that.

yeah im pretty set on the cutaway with electronics. my style of playing doesnt necessarily need a cutaway as a rhythm, but when taking the lead, i like to go up there. My main question was the difference in the electronics. I went to the guitar center on 14th in manahizzle yesterday though and played the Aura.
It was mind blowing.
You have the option of playing straight from the pickup, which unlike the regular dc-16, isnt in the sound hole, which is nicer.
the amazing thing, is that you can switch it to play from 6 preset mic sounds straight from the built in preamp. and you can modify them, and also blend it so it plays from both the preamp and the pickup. It was SICK. Guy said its the best pickup technology out there. This is all plugged in. Unplugged its that magical martin sound.
D-28's are amazing, and i think of standard body as well, but im only getting one expensive guitar right now, and need one that suites all my needs.

like ive said, i have never played a really nice guitar, but from what it sounds like you might like a Taylor. My understanding is that taylor has always had superior electronics, and might cater to your playing style a little better.
wish i could be more help, but it sounds like either way you go you are going to be stoked. Each guitar is amazing in its own rights, just play them both again and sleep on it a few more.
good luck.

taylor's are nice. but you are either a martin man or a taylor man, or if you are really rich, you can be both.
im a martin man. i played a 7series taylor for a while, then switched to this martin, and it blew it away, IMO
appreciate the feedback.

That's the understatement of the century right there. Saul would tear about 99.9% of the people on there boards apart when it comes to playing guitar.srslots81 wrote:I am a decent player, and my fingers, and everyone else's ears deserve this upgrade.
Once he gets his new guitar, he'll post a couple songs for your guys to listen in awe too. Best part is his ability to come up with ridiculous riffs out of no where....while using a pic AND his tumb

Unless you're completely set on a martin, Larrivee make some amazing guitars for a lot less. If you get a chance to play one, you should. They're amazing. Look at this for example:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... Track=true

You're going to struggle to get a guitar with those specs for $1,499.00.
As for the pickup, you could always install that later. I've heard some good things about the B-Bands.
