low E string problem

Unread post by Grachi » Thu Jul 07, 2005 7:09 pm

I was putting new strings on my guitar today and I was putting on the low E (the thickest one) and as I was winding the string through the tuning head, the tension became incredible and you couldn't turn it anymore, but the string wasn't in tune yet. It was pretty flat and obviously needed to be tuned some more, but it felt that if I tried to turn it anymore the string would snap. So I tried anyway with closed eyes but I could only turn it a little more, and it's still not in tune.

What could be causing this? Only thing I can think of doing is unwinding it and making sure it's in the bridge correctly. Like maybe the string isn't sliding through the pin or it got stuck or something.

try getting a mechanical pencil and rubbing some graphite in the E string's notch where the string slips into the headstock.

I dont know if that will solve your problem, but it reduces friction while winding.

Also, try giving your string a little more slack before winding up.

hey it worked! :)

Good suggestion. It's in tune and I could even make it sharp with ease now. thanks.
