1954 martin d-28

Unread post by [adult swim] » Sun May 01, 2005 2:07 am

i was at my grandparents house today and brought my guitar. my grandfather didnt know i played guitar and said he had one in the attic. it turns out it is a martin d-28 that he bought in 1954 for $275. when i was done shitting on myself i went straight to the guitar shop and bought some new strings and an allen wrench. after a couple nervous turns on the truss rod this thing is fucking awesome. this thing is my new best friend. he said i could have it because forgot how to play due to the fact that he hasnt played it since the 70s. i would never dream of selling this guitar but im wondering how much it is worth. does anyone know any ballpark figures

Well......it was stored up in an attic, so even though it may look good to you, there may be some kind of damage due to the extreme heat and cold it has been subjected to. There is a good possibility that the guitar was made with Brazilian Rosewood, and that would be sweet.
I would have it professionally looked at...it could be worth some $$. Nice find!

EDIT: Did some searching and found a post at another site about a 1952 D-28 located at Guitar Center store in Atlanta, GA....the price was in the neighborhood of $8,000.

Wow..........
Take care of it like nothing else

If it is in good shape (i.e. minimal finish wear, no cracks or just the pickguard crack, good neck angle, not many dings) and all original............you are talking about $8,000-$10,000 guitar. But don't sell it now unless you are forced to by the IRS or something because the value will only go up and up and up and up as the years go by.

If its in fair condition then maybe $6-8 grand.

You seriously need to post some pics of it

I just noticed you said it has a truss rod.......a 1954 D-28 does not have a truss rod. Martin didn't start using them untill the 70's or 80's

Somethin's wrong here.......
