if one plays with light strings instead of medium will it make for an easier, smooth strum?

I havent found that the strings really affext how easy it is to strum... It is definitely harder on your fretting hand with thicker strings, and they build up your hand strength quite a bit. I always feel like I am awesome at guitar when I switch from mediums back to lights, for like a week.

It doesn't have a big affect on how you strum but it affects the sound. Medium strings I think sound better when you strum because they don't slap around the fret board...I think I could have worded that better, Medium sound better than light. :D

According to the Taylor site, Dreads should use med, and the other body styles use lights. They also say that using a heavier string on a guitar does not improve volume and may actually dampen some of the natural ring of an OM for example.

If you play with thicker gauge, (check the max. on your guitar, playing a too heavy gauge is bad on some models) you'll get better and stronger. It's like lifting weights, the more the stronger you get.
