the DX's are ok, but not the best. I mean, for a starter guitar, they are fine, but don't be going on a tour with it.

I've posted it numerous times, so I'll say it yet again:

DmbfanJason has both a DX1 and a Taylor 414. The 414 doesn't ever leave it's case. We both think the DX1 sounds better. Granted, I'm a Martin fan. If you've ever heard any of his recordings, they were done on a DX1. I think for the money it's a great guitar.

Don't put on extra lights. They'll make your hands girly and they'll sound like crap after playing them for a couple days. Stick with lights or mediums.

I have the DCX1E and I love it. I use it for gigs also. Great sounding guitar. I wouldn't say it's exclusively for starters

I like my 000X1. Yea it doesnt have as good of tone as my d-28 or d36 or d16gte but it plays better and you dont have to worry about bangin it up.

But for brightness, an X model is really brighter than most solid wood martins.........you could argue mahogany is brighter but solid rosewood is definately not as bright. The way you can get a guitar brighter is by changing the type of strings, not so much the size. Like 80-20 bronze is brighter than phosphor bronze(which is what i use on all my guitars), and 85-15 bronze is even brighter than 80-20.

So if you want your guitar to be brighter, use 80-20 or 85-15 bronze. There might be something even brighter, but idk i havent used it. Some charts on the back of guitar string packs have a list of the types of strings from mellow to brightest.

i own a dcx1e also. i play everyshow with it also. its sounds incredible unplugged and in my opinion can beat a lot of the higher end martins out there with sound. (my opinion) It all depends on the sound you are looking for. Ive played some other dcx1es also that sound like shit and are no comparison to mine. but congrats on getting your guitar and i wouldnt go any lighter than lights.

if you really like it don't let others persuade you otherwise - i too have a DCX1E and love it except that it buzzes a little, i put mediums on and that helped but i think when i get home i'm gonna take it to a shop, probably just the truss rod but i don't like playing around with it, other people can do it for sure

anyway, if you like it, great

I would have saved up about 200 more to get the D-15.

The DX, though, is fine

Ah, I used to own a D-15. I couldn't stand the way the thing played. In my opinion the DCX1E plays better. Also, the D-15 doesn't come with onboard electronics. D-15 is a great solid wood guitar though for the money.
