I never heard of anybody cleaning strings...When they lose color you should change them. Buy some elixirs (14.00$) they usually last 3 times longer than any other strings I have used.

Technically, you should be cleaning your strings after each session to prolong their tone and life. I clean mine, but not that often, cause its just too easy to buy a new set for $6. I use Fast Fret - you can get it at any guitar shop. Just apply a coat of that, take the included cloth and just pinch each string while sliding all the way up and down. You'll see the dirt come off on the cloth - and man, you'd be suprised at how dirty your strings are, even if they look pretty clean.

Yea I can atest to that. I just strung up some D'Addarios Phosphor/Bronze Lights and after playing 3 days for about 3-4 hours cumulative each day my strings have green crap all over them from my fingers or something. I wash my hands before I play too. I think I might get the coated type next time... these are hard to slide with. My fingers get stuck on the strings sometimes.

cleaning strings is alright, it does keep the color and the tone there but just change strings after a while to always have it sharp.
