Painting a Guitar/ *Update* bttom page 2
Has anyone here re-painted their guiat before?
I have a 90's strat that is cream, and I hate the color, I wanted to pain that like a dark blue.
But one of my acoustics has a crack and is a POS anyways, so I was going to paint it like an art projects of sorts, just something to hang on the wall.
any advice?
what type of paint does each need?
best way to sand?
what shouold I use for a gloss coat?

i dont know what kind of paint you would use..i would use an airbrush.. but about the electric..
generally when painting wood you dont want to paint over the previous paint job.. at the very least sand it, try to get as much of the old paint off as possible... then sand lightly after each coat to let the next coat stick a better.. then dont sand after the last coat
this isnt a guess, ive done lots of stuff like this before
and i have no idea how you would go about painting an acoustic

use a razor blade to get rid of the paint, the sand the rest until its just the wood. then do what he said up there, paint a layer, use a fine grade of paper and sand a little, paint another layer, sand, another layer, sand, add a layer of gloss, sand, more gloss, sand, more gloss sand.

i dont think you need AS many steps as filmdude said.. but you do need to sand, paint, sand paint, sand paint because paint doesnt magically stick, although it does have its own way of being an adhesive it requires space to sink into.. painting on a smooth laminate or on the smooth surface of an electric would not be effective.. it wouldnt look very good and it would also peel VERY fast...jellyfish wrote:I dont see the point of painting , sanding, painting sanding, painting, sanding, glossing, sanding, sanding, sanding, painting, sanding,golssing.filmdude100cms wrote:use a razor blade to get rid of the paint, the sand the rest until its just the wood. then do what he said up there, paint a layer, use a fine grade of paper and sand a little, paint another layer, sand, another layer, sand, add a layer of gloss, sand, more gloss, sand, more gloss sand.

the sanding/painting/sanding ensure there are grooves for the paint..
and if theres another paint job on it it will ensure that you see ONLY your preferred color.

ive painted 3 electrics... AUTOMOTIVE PAINT IS GOLD
just sand it down, go to pepboys, get primer, color, and clearcoat, then wax it with automotive wax. (swear to god it works beautifully) you can also get chameleon stuff too if you're into that. i did one guitar with a mirror finish.

remove everything. strats are easy cuz the pickguard has all the elctrronics in it, you just need to unscrew the output. then take the neck, bridge, and everything off until your at just plain wood.checkii wrote:thanks guys.
What about taking the guitars apart??? how far should I go with removing parts?
I think i'm gonna start in a month when I get up to WA and get some money.
