My Guitar is Haunted. Desperate help.

Unread post by gumbomadness » Fri Jan 28, 2005 5:58 pm

Whats going on? It all started one day.. i put my guitar in a gig bag.. 4 hours later i open it and ALL the strings are fine but the high e looked like someone turned the knob 15 times so that the string was REALLLLY loose. But.. it seemed like it was wound enough, (wrapped around) but the note was WAAAYYYY low,
Confused yet? I am.

THEN.. i tune it up of course, all is fine..
3 days later i am bending my high e up.. (too much) the thing makes a dreadful CLICK sound and ..

instantly... its as if someone turned it REALLLY low again. (but still wrapped i think..and the tightness wasnt amazingly loose).

So i keep turning it up.. turning turning.. ALMOST tuned..

CLICK...

and its low again.
But it didnt fall out of the nut groove. Or the telecaster clip thing at the top.. or the thing at the bottom (bridge)...

So im turning it up again.. almost tuned..

SNAP!

What do i do? Is my guitar broken?
I cant believe im asking about this, i thought my only questions here would be about trading and theory.

its not in the bridge pin well, its snapping more into place and loosens the string.

if you are sure that the ball end of the string is seated properly, it sounds like your tuner could be slipping. where does the click come from?

sounds like a bridge pinissue. worst case scenario the gears in the tuner is stripped. thats bad

The tuning pegs are a gear mechanism. Likely they are really loose and the gears are slipping. You may want to replace your tuners.

i think you just need to pull harder on the ball when you restring it to assure it is in the right place.

i would bet the tuner is shot. If there was as much lost tension as you say, and it has done this several times without you actually taking the ball end out, the string is probably seated properly. Is this an electric or an acoustic?

its an electric.
telecaster imitation by washburn.

the thing is.. its neck feels better than the expensive telecasters to me..
its ... 8-10 years old, and im thinking im gonna save and swap out the pick ups for some bad ass !)@#*$ and if the tuners are messed up, then replace that as well...

What kind of pickups do yall suggest?
Should i change the bridge thing and change the regular single coil tele style stuff to the humbucker-style tele ? whats the difference in sound?

As far as my haunted string, im gonna replace tomorrow, and cross my fingers. >.<
