Switching from light to med elixirs question?

Unread post by myonlybliss » Thu Nov 18, 2004 2:48 pm

If I switch to med gauge from light gauge strings, will it lower the action or raise it? Right now there is a little too much relief in the neck and I'm wondering if the relief would lessen or become greater?

Thanks

Med gauge would tighten the neck. I'm not quite sure what you mean by relief. But the tension will increase with heavier gauge strings.

It would lower the action.

that's what i was thinking but,
wouldn't more tension (med gauge) cause more backbow on the neck therefore raising the action?????

Hmmmm, I just figured that thicker strings would lower the action because they are closer to the fretboard. I dunno, good question.

not much of a difference, ive used mediums, switched to lights, thrown on mediums a time or two, little change, kinda equals everything else.

They have a coating on them that makes them last longer.

you probably won't notice that much action difference when switching to Meds.. It will lower the action because A) it's a thicker string and B) it adds more tension to the neck, pulling the fretboard closer to the strings

But with that lowered action (which really isn't noticable at all -- it just has to do with the diameter of the strings) with the thicker strings, the tension will be increased and you'll have to push harder, which makes a big difference whether you're used to the other strings or not.
