**Official Guitar Review Thread**

Unread post by Xoosh » Fri Feb 21, 2003 10:34 am

Hehe, thought this would be a fun thread... Really it's a potential thread for you to talk about your guitar and such... since we're all eventually looking to buy a new guitar, perhaps this thread will give some reviews of what you think of your guitar and what situations you think it's really outshined other guitars in (ie: band situation or solo musician, etc...).

So i'll start it out.

I currently own:
1. Martin D-15
Image

This guitar is fantastic for the price. I paid $425 for a brand new one (however it had a very very little scratch - hence the price cut...albiet quite extreme) However i've seen them on ebay for anywhere from $450 - $600 (typically $599 new). Since the guitar has a solid body mohagany build it is QUITE bassy (which is what I initially wanted when purchasing this guitar) -- the Mahogany wood boosts the bass over the trebble giving it one hell of a punch on the 6th E and ESPECIALLY when you put it in drop D (which was what caused me to fall in love with it). I had a Fishman Matrix 2 (i think) pickup installed into it -- without onboards and bought a martin/fishman pre-amp which does the same thing as the onboard controls, i've encountered a problem with this guitar when i try to plug it in... the overpowering bass literally ruins the acoustic sound. Even when you turn your bass (Lo) quite low and raise your mids and Hi-s it still loses a LOT of its potential to sound as good as an acoustic guitar can sound. However, you get what you pay for =) This guitar is AMAZING acousticly. Infact I dont really think i've played a better guitar for under $600 acousticly... plug in a takemine or something for $300 and it'd probably sound better.... but that's the name of the game when you're playing with exclusive woods like that... Here's a clip of the D15: http://www.eastofbeautiful.com/files/dropdjam1.mp3 (same jam sort of as the Loprinzi clip - but i recorded this a while back so im not sure what boosts i've given to either the bass or trebble).

2. A. Loprinzi Dreadnaught Acoustic (model LR-15 from 1975)
Image
(This is the 2002 equivalent of the 1975 LR-15)

List $2400.00 - This guitar has back and sides of East Indian Rosewood and a Sitka Spruce top (I find this odd because at that time era .... brazilian rosewood sounded so much better and was much more popular and easily available...) While it does have a boomy east indian body build to it, the punch from the 6th E is nothing like the Martin guitar (I'm not sure if this comes down to craftsmanship or wood or what may cause this... the wood is certainly superior). I've recorded a sample drop d jam i wrote to get an idea how this sounds if you're interested here is the link (i only added reverb left trebble and bass alone and recorded at a standard setting): http://www.eastofbeautiful.com/files/al ... _dropd.mp3 (the rattle you may hear is from my 1st E (the high pitched one) that i never took off even though it's broken in half... sorry about that) I've not had any electronics installed, but i plan on getting the L.R. Baggs Ibeam2 (active) installed into it because of the rosewood body i think it'd play like a dream when plugged in. It is a fun guitar to play, the action is pretty good, etc...

3. Guild F 212 XL - NT (no clue what the NT stands for)
Image

List (for the 1999) is $1799 ... but i think the older models are more valuable in the sense that they are pre-fender... This guitar WAS a limited series that had come out in spurts here and there... not really since the 80's though. My guitar is from the Guild era before Fender bought them out (bastards). This 12 string is Rich, beautiful, and powerful. From what i can find... it seems to have Mohagony backing and sides, and Spruce top. However im not sure how accurate that information is especially because i cant find any information on the "NT" and because the information I got was from the 1999 edition. So... Anyways, here's a clip... i'm still trying to find uses for a 12 string as my style doesnt really require one nor does it sound especially cool with a 12 string... but ... here's some grey street loving: http://www.eastofbeautiful.com/files/gr ... _guild.mp3 - as far as 12 strings go, im quite pleased with this, however i've never played any other high-end 12 strings to have anything to compair it to (ie: a martin or taylor 12 string).

Well, let me know what you guys have! :)

regards,
X

OK....I'm not gonna review them today but I will show you what I have got.

My main axe is the Taylor 314ce (with custom TRC cover)
Image
Here is the TRC I have on it:
Picture Here

Another guitar I have is an Epiphone (that's right) Chet Atkins SST - this guitar was a gift from my parents so they don't know too much about guitars to get me the Gibson - it's fun none the less.

And my electric which I've had for years and now sits in it's case under my bed is an Epiphone Flying V

I own a:
1) Hofner 12 string (cant find a picture.. will be making one soon, will post then) - List price: dont know. Top/Back/Sides: dont know. Fretboard: Rosewood :). Inlays: 2 parallelograms (abalone maybe) 3 on 12th fret, 2 types of wood on odd/12th frets. Headstock: my guess is ebony. says HOFNER on top. Also has headstock inlay. Got it from my mom. Good guitar, some even say it sounds close to a taylor. If you want to hear it i will soon be posting a clip in recordings.

2) Godin LGX
Best electric ive ever seen/played. To think i once thought the best was gibson. i was told the shop i bought it from had to buy it for $3800. Not many people go into the shop planning to spend that much so i bought it when it was $1000. Cherryburst on AAA flamed maple top. 2 Seymour Duncan humbuckers, 1 L.R. Baggs with custom Pre-Amp EQ for Acoustic volume, treble, mid-range, and bass controls. 3 way switch to choose between the Seymour Duncans, the L.R. Baggs, or a blend of both. 3 outputs for the same thing. Lowest action ive ever played with no fret buzzing. Amazing sound, amazing look, amazing for anything. Sounds pretty good unplugged too, doesnt match up to a nice acoustic though :)

My acoustic was given to me by my uncle last christmas, It cost $50 dollars and 2,000+ marlboro miles. Before you laugh, it doesnt say Marlboro anywhere on it or anything and it actually sounds really good considering the source, but Im deffinatley in need of a new one, 310ceLtd. soon, hopefully.

This is my acoustic; the first acoustic I have owned. It is what you've been hearing on my covers. It is an Ibanez AW100 (Art Wood 100):

http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.as ... =AW100&z=y

I first owned a Samick electric, which sucked. The only thing good about it was that I learned my first DMB song on it: Ants Marching.

I then got this guitar, as I was taking a cheesy guitar class at school and acoustics were preferred. The guitars that were provided were some horrible classical guitars with nylong strings that were a mile off the fretboard.

Then later I bought a Fender Standard Stratocaster, but I never played it 'cause I loved acoustic so much. I sold it on eBay.

This guitar sounds really good for the price I paid at my local music shop: $245 (On sale from $299), with a lifetime warranty.

I couldn't be happier with a guitar that was relatively cheap. I got a Fishman Prefix Pickup installed, but I don't have a good acoustic amp, so it isn't real great on my electric amp, but it works. I usually don't plug it in, anyways.

I played all the Fender acoustics in the shop, and I definitely think these Ibanez Artwoods have much better tone. I think it is an overall pretty guitar, and feels very well built. The neck has a good size for different styles of playing, and the tuners work perfectly: never any problems. They are sealed stainless steel, so no damage.

Eventually I would love to get a Martin HD-28. I just need a major cash flow.

Oh yeah, whether you care or not, I have a Yamaha BB404 Electric Bass, which I rarely play (same problem with the Fender: I can't stay away from acoustic guitar). You can see it here:

http://yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/Ds ... 00004BB404

It's definitely a great sounding bass. I saw Victor Wooten on the Live In Chicago show, and I HAD to have a bass. It was $299 on musiciansfriend.com. As I said, I haven't been playing it, so I'll probably end up selling it for my Martin fund...

Guitars

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Tue Feb 25, 2003 2:27 pm

I currently have two guitars:

Takamine EF341SC with the Accuracoustic Preamp...

Image

It's brand new from the 2002 series...maple bodied guitar with a cedar top...sounds awsome plugged in...

Squier Subsonic Showmaster Delux (Baritone)

Image

It's hard to find any info on this guitar...it just so happened that a local guitar store had one...I played it and fell in love w/ it...It's got a real low bassy feeling, while still having the higher sounds of a standard strat...

I currently own a Martin D15 just like the one at the top of the post. However I have owned a Big Baby Taylor which:
-is a nice guitar for the price
-i paid high 2s for it brand new
-it has a very high sound to it which is more typical of all the taylors
-is very easy to play so it would be a great guitar for anyone young or old trying to learn how to play
-is kind of fragile (i broke the neck almost in two actually someone knocked it off the guitar stand)
-is overall a great guitar and one that you can upgrade from without taking out a mortage

I got lucky and found one barely scatched for $900...talk about a deal...

It was next-to new when I bought it, and I watched it in the store as the price kept falling until I said "yoink" aloud, and took it from the wall and said..."i guess  for $900" and I walked out a happier man :D
