Acoustics
Acoustics
I couldn't really think of a subject title -- but could someone explain some stuff to me!
I've been playing for about 3 years now -- I've got to the point where I've mastered the rythym part to most songs (predominately Dave stuff) and have started to figure out some sweet little solos to riff on. (I could send you an awesome #41 solo I worked out that's easy as hell to play and sounds GREAT).
I'm looking for a good acoustic to buy and need advice about which body type I should go for. I love the look of Grand Auditoriums (Taylor's 14 series, and Gibson's EL-00) but my experience with them is that they are better finerpicking guitars, where I prefer to beat the hell out of my strings. Should I therefore opt for a dreadnought?
How does Dave play grand auditoriums so hard?
Any help would be appreciated, especially some guitar recommendations. I'm looking to spend like $1800.
Thanks in advance!

well in that case, if you want ugly, inconsistant, boring, dead sounding guitars, get a martin.Trippin Hillbilly wrote:If you want tone, get a martin.

Martin's are much less pretty then taylors, i agree, but taylors are just lacking that bass that martins are known for.. 8)shane wrote:well in that case, if you want ugly, inconsistant, boring, dead sounding guitars, get a martin.Trippin Hillbilly wrote:If you want tone, get a martin.

My friend has a Taylor 314CE thats a nice lead acoustic but still sounds gorgeous, well, all the time. I'm not really sure what you're asking here - it sounds like you're gettin more into lead stuff, so I would recommend looking at that ^ and I'm sure that will bring you to other guitars you want to look at, but I wouldnt want to play the crap out of a Grand Auditorium Martin, unless I could afford to replace it like Dave

He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.
This is a myth. the x14 size taylors obviously won't have as much bass at a Martin dread, thats just the body shape. I have a Taylor dread and in my opinion it sounds better than a martin dread and plays a hell of a lot better. I've also had many other people comment on how well it sounds. If you want to strum check out dreads from a variety of brands.DMBFan63 wrote:shane wrote:Trippin Hillbilly wrote:If you want tone, get a martin.

I disagree. Martin Dreds sound amazing compared to Taylor dreds. They're still bright as hell compared to martins.. I think Martins just have the best bass tone you can buy. Just my opinion. whatever though, to each his ownsacdeez wrote:DMBFan63 wrote:shane wrote:This is a myth. the x14 size taylors obviously won't have as much bass at a Martin dread, thats just the body shape. Fuck that. If you want hillbilly tone, buy a Martin, if you want the New Sound, being showcased by OAR, DMB, and every major acoustic act on the planet- go Taylor.Trippin Hillbilly wrote:If you want tone, get a martin.

The New Taylor x14s are far more balanced and loud than ever before, they're pretty deep for a moderate bodied guitar. Give one a try, especially a sitka with a rosewood or cocobolo. a Sitka Coco dread can give Martin an ass whipping for bass.
Fuck a company that refuses to innovate.

Yeah, I'm sure Martin could build me a guitar I'd like too, but it's their standard line I am attacking. Dave plays a 714, 914, and a W65 from Taylor, all without his name, and one special guitar named after him.HendrixWS wrote:Hey dave still plays the Martin. What about CSNY. They all swear by Martin. BTW: Besides Dave and Mayer, every act you named was playing before Taylor guitars existed. It's sad a thirty year old company can take major market-share from a company that's been around since 1833.
