Computer Mic Recording

Unread post by jsgksu » Sat Feb 01, 2003 4:29 pm

Im not real serious about recording or anything but I would like to record myself so I can hear myself and critique my playing a mostly my singing. I tried to use my computer mic, I had it real close to the soundhole and when I played it back I could barely hear anything and it was real crackly. Is everyones mic this shitty or is it just mine. I dont really wanna spend a bunch of money yet for recording equipment so Id like to fix this computer mic problem, anyone have any insight or suggestions for me.

that has nothing whatsoever to do with it. my problem is when I play it back Ive got the volume completely jacked up on my comp. and I can barely hear anything and what I hear is very crackly. is it possible to get a half decent recording off a computer mic or is mine just a piece of crap?

well, the crackliness *could* have to do with the closeness to the soundhole, and this is what i was addressing. as for the quality, yes it's perfectly reasonable to get a good quality recording off a computer mic. try opening the volume control, setting it to "recording" (under properties) and checking the Mic Boost option under the advanced dialog box underneath the microphone slider. this will probably fix your volume problem. if not, make sure you're plugged into the microphone port; the line-in doesn't have any phantom power. as for the crackliness, it could be either the distance from the soundhole, a bad mic, perhaps bad software used to record, not enough ram, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Well I did what you said and I can actually hear the music now, though I still cant get it up real loud but it sounds like I recorded it in 100 mph winds. Its still kinda crackly and there is a lot of whooshhhs, you think I just got a crappy mic, its the one that came with me Dell. Its not the distance cuz I backed up and went forward and everything, I dont know what software I have to record, Im just using the sound recorder program that came with the comp, its gotta be the mic or the software, is there anything I can do to fix this you think?

he said he was using sound recorder. it could be your mic, it's more than likely not sound recorder because i've recorded stuff through it as well. and i was using my crappy computer mic as well, so i don't know. try and borrow a friends mic sometimes and use that to see if it's your mic.

i'm very fond of the mics that come with dell's, so i doubt it's that - try either cool edit pro (you can find it on kazaa) or protools free (http://www.digidesign.com/) if you can find it - you have to have win98 though and it has kind of a steep learning curve
EDIT: the protools has the somewhat steep learning curve, the cool edit pro is fairly easy to use, though kinda noobular
