does the number of pieces of the back wood make a great amount of difference to the sound of the guitar, and if so how.

3 peice backs look so amazing to me.. They may make a slight difference, due to usually 3 peice backs are two species of wood..

umm... not really.

and its very rare to find a 1 piece back.. in fact i dont really think they ever use them. easier to work with 2 pieces. youll notice that the tops are also 2 pieces. they bookmatch to find the best matches.

Not really what? I didn't mention 1 peice backs, he did.. I think if you play the same guitar with a two peice back, then the same guitar with a 3 peice back, it'll sound slightly different due to the fact that there are two difference species of wood in a 3 peice back(in most cases that is)

In an old magazine: "C.F Martin popularized the three-piece back as a way of using brazilian rosewood pieces that were too narrow to be part of a two-piece back, and too short to be sides"

most of the time 3 piece backs are the same wood. its very rare to see different woods. in fact off the top of my head the DM3MD is the only one i can think of.

Taylor did a 600 and a 700 series that have alternating maple and cocobolo. I've got a 710 (see the sig) and they sound really nice and complex. They also can be had for a fair price.

I've seen Smaller Luthiers do multiple piece backs up to 9, they have a fan effect, but very cool.
