Need advise on buying

Unread post by matttherevelator41 » Mon Apr 05, 2004 6:16 pm

I dont know whether I should get a new Martin d16rgt from my local dealer or online. At the store it is $80 more expensive plus about 45 dollars added on for tax. Online has free shipping and no tax but I won't be able to play the EXACT guitar I am buying.....what should I do???

p.s. I am a poor college student

Buy it at the store...not only do you make sure you get what you want, but a lot of times you can talk the salesperson down

Depends on if you want to establish a relationship with the local store or not. If you plan on buying a lot of stuff and its a small store then I would go for it. If its a walmart guitar store then I wouldnt bother
If your friend is already dead, and being eaten by vultures, I think it's okay to feed some bits of your friend to one of the vultures, to teach him to do some tricks. But ONLY if you're serious about adopting the vulture.

If the store isn't a nationwide company, go with the store. If you're talkin about Guitar Center, buy it online.

Good call. Building a rapport with a local company can be worth a lot more than $100. Plus they would probably make adjustments/add a strap button etc. for free.

Just tell him straight out... "Give it to me for xxxx price, or i'm going to get it elsewhere." Usually that will do the trick. If not, start to walk away, and see if they stop you. If not, then just go get it online.

Works for cars, works for guitars.

im pretty sure i could do that at guitarcenter, but the guys at my shop are pretty straight shooters. Should i do that at guitar center, and pay the tax or just get it online w/o tax?

You can't double-back.. if you told them "I'll pay [this] or no deal" and then they weren't interested in that, then you can't pull that one again because clearly you didn't go buy the other guitar.. and if you come around there a lot like you said, then they know you'll be back.. bargaining like that requires a genuine threat of no future business.

If the guitar in the store is what you want, then pay the extra $100; $100 over years of time will be nothing compared to the "the other guitar sounded better" kicking yourself in the ass for years.
