my beef with them is that they're weird as hell. to be honest when I first tried them (elixir nanowebs) I was diggin' them because of how crispy and bright the sound was. but as time went on they got all hairy as the coating started to come off. after a few months, they really even start to tarnish or get gummy and brutal like bronze strings will do, however, the tone of the strings became really thin and gay when strumming. the individual notes were still quite clear and sustained quite long, but the on the chords, the overal tone lacked...well tone. I tried them again after that and noticed it even more and I became completely convinced. so the bad tone combined with the oil slick slipperyness (which I admit wears down over time) the hair effect when the coating comes off the strings around the soundhole from all the strumming. so since then I've not gone back to them. I've went to pure 85/15 bronze strings which had a wonderful natural heavy tone but were pretty squeaky and tough to play some stuff and they turned black in a couple weeks so I decided to go back to D'Addario phosphor bronze which I think are the best strings overall as far as tone and playability goes. sure people who have acid fingers and turn their strings everycolor of the rainbow, have little choice but to go with the coated strings to avoid changing strings every week. but the coated strings cost twice as much as regular strings. I must admit, I havn't tried D'Addario or Martin or any other coated strings so I can't say anything about them. I understand the D'Addarios are phos/bronze and coated which proabably makes some sort of difference. anyway, that's my beef and I'm sticking to it.
when I said they should be taken off the market, I was just being a dick and overstating the fact that I really don't like them.
peace

your problem is that you are using strings for a few months... change em more often than that dudegravedigger wrote:my beef with them is that they're weird as hell. to be honest when I first tried them (elixir nanowebs) I was diggin' them because of how crispy and bright the sound was. but as time went on they got all hairy as the coating started to come off. after a few months, they really even start to tarnish or get gummy and brutal like bronze strings will do, however, the tone of the strings became really thin and gay when strumming. the individual notes were still quite clear and sustained quite long, but the on the chords, the overal tone lacked...well tone. and this hair thing that everyone keeps bitching about is firsts of all, not that big a deal, it hardly affects playing and second of all, are due to improper attack of the string. so its your fault, not the strings

Fatjack, youre completely right about the attack of the string when it comes to uncoated versus coated. IT requires a different technique and requires a player trying to make teh changeover to adjust his "style" more or less. This is why I hated them. I like the way my playing sounds with uncoated strings, and coated strings sounded like garbage and I was not willing to put in the effort to make it sound good.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking. Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away. Forget about the guilty, we are innocent instead, for soon we shall all find our lives swept away.

I thought the wonderful thing about coated strings is that they last longer than uncoated strings. anyway, I'm pretty easy on my strings. I always wash my hands before I play and I'm lucky I guess because my strings never turn green or get gummy when I play.fatjack wrote:

improper attack? ok I'll take the blame for the hair. I guess I missed the instructions on the back of the pack of strings on how to strum.fatjack wrote: and this hair thing that everyone keeps bitching about is firsts of all, not that big a deal, it hardly affects playing and second of all, are due to improper attack of the string. so its your fault, not the strings
so why do you use them? do they sound better to you?
