Actually I own a 914CE as well to answer your question. Of course there is a very distinctive difference; however, at his price range and after owning one myself, i can safely say that for the price range he is looking at the martin DR is an excellent choice. Personal oppinion of course though.crash_in_to_me wrote:seriously go for the d15

You could pick up a used Taylor 310 in the $600 - $700. I got one in that range that was only a few months old. The 310 is an all solid wood guitar with unquestionably better construction than the Martin D-15 (the Taylor has binding and gloss top, whereas the D-15 does not... though they probably sound comparable).
There are certainly other good makes of guitars in that price range, but if your decision is between Taylor and Martin, I recommend the 310.

The d-15 has never been that impressive to me. I honestly liked the sound of the dx1 better...something about the all mahogany just doesnt do it for me. Personally though, I dont know why anyone would get a taylor dred (barring a fantasitic deal maybe) over a martin dred. I mean, its one thing if youre looking for the taylor sound, fine...get an x14. Thats what they do best. But otherwise, I would never buy a taylor x10 series. The warmth just isnt there. Theres a reason why Martin is always the yardstick when it comes to dreds. *Note for the retarded: Yes, that was opinion, not necissarily fact.
Here's what I recommend: Keep saving. 600-700 is no man's land. Youre better off waiting and getting something up in the $1000 range. My main reasoning is that there are a lot of $300 guitars that sound about as good as most Martin/Taylor $600 guitars. If youre set on getting a guitar now, DEFINITELY go used.

Blueridge
A 600-800 dollar blueridge sounds only a notch below most high end martins. They looks awesome as well (except for the ugly pick guard, but you can change that.) Not too many people know about them yet, and they're so cheap still cause they're made in Korea. Pick them up now. My 300 dollar blueridge sounds good next to my 2500 Larrivee J-10.

I agree...most Taylors are set up better out of the box, and theyre somewhat easier to play. Martins need more fine tuning.BigSpeen3436 wrote:Taylor's have a total different feel to them, thats why I like them.mbgreen wrote:The d-15 has never been that impressive to me. yes, and i have never really been fond of any low end Marting, except the DG-16RGTE and that isn't very low end. I will admit though that I played a DM at some local shop a few years back and it sounded pretty sweet. Very warm for a laminate back/sides

$$$500-800 is the worst amount of money for a guitar. Cheaper are the better laminants, and just about are the decent solid bodies. In this period I would just save my money. You could go to a dealer like Buffalo Bros where they let you trade up.
