Yeah, I gotta agree with gcom on the Taylor fad deal. I think people are putting way too much faith in what they're favorite musician plays. Sometimes I wonder if they even listen to the true tone that they get or just con themselves into thinking it sounds great because so-and-so plays it. Get what sounds the absolute best to you, not because dave plays it or just because it has some exotic sounding tone wood in it (where the hell did cocobolo come from? it sounds like a breakfast cereal)

i first went to sam ash about 8 months ago, and i played both taylors and martins. i hadnt heard of either of them. i played the taylors and i loved em. they blew me away.
what stores do you go to that say dave is the reason for taylors being so popular? taylors just keep getting better. people say they dont like taylors bass response. taylor revoices them. people love taylors sound on stage, taylor makes the ES and makes it even better. dave had barely any sway on consumers when it comes to taylors.

The 414 and HD35 are really two different sorts of guitars.
The 414 summer rosewood limited has electronics, the HD35 does not. If the 414 didn't have electronics, it would sell for a few hunderd less... in fact maybe about 60% of what the HD35 costs.
Also, the HD35 is a dred... so it will have more boom... the grand auditorium 414 probably has more defined highs. I see the 414 more as a stage guitar... you know, playing in a band vs. playing solo.
Also, the 414 has a 1 3/4" neck vs. 1 11/16 on the HD35. Most fingerstyle players would prefer the larger neck on the 414. But if you want to play fast riffs, the smaller neck is probably easier.
That being said, I currently own a 514ce and am looking to pick up a Martin dred. They're both great guitars.

Dave hasnt been playing Taylors that long, Taylor has been popular much longer than that. the 30th anniversary is coming up and theyre the dominating guitar company, just like they were when the 25th anniversary rolled around.

Gcom, I bought a 310, but I might be the only one here with a dread
Anywho, I personally just want to play as a hobby, therefore I thought the dread would be a good idea because it is pretty loud, and I really don't think I will ever play in a band. DMB is really the only "acoustic" band I like besides OAR (no comments from Gcom please!). I would find myself maybe playing a few shows with another guitarist, or a singer. Anyway, I just thought a dread suited my style more. I also don't fingerpick much. As for my 310, what do you think the best guitar for $650 would be???? A D-15, I personally cannot stand the mahogany's sound. Too much for me. So when I ran across ElGuitarrista selling his 310 for $650, I jumped all over it. BYE.

i love dreads, in fact, id choose a revoiced dread over a GA. both of my acoustics are dreads (im lucky to have a 12 string dread) and theyre great for everything. they may not suit fingerpicking as well as a GA but i think its worth the sacrifice.

I got me a dread, man. A D-15 actually, I just like their sound, they work for me. I fingerpick and all that on it too, I'm not gonna let the fact that I own a dread halt me from that. Look at Charlie Parker, he played on plastic saxophones at one point.

I'm getting a Martin because that's what jkanter plays.
Jimi Hendrix played a strat. Jimmy page prefers Les Paul. Its all subjective since they are obviously both great manufacturers.
(whispers) Martins are better.

gcom007 wrote:b/c Taylor's are trendy right now, dave matthews primarily plays a taylor, he drives most acoustic guitarists, notice how everyone gets 14 models??? oh yeah, that's what dave plays. remember how everyone wanted a chet atkins? yeah, umm, I got one a couple months back for use with an electric amp to get some dirty acoustic tones, and I'm sorry, but that guitar sucks colossally. it's by far one of the worst sounding guitars I've heard. not only that, the finished neck is just a pain to play. it's all relative to one thing: Dave Matthews. If Dave started playing Takamines more, I guarantee you that Taylor guitars would drop off the map and everyone would be getting Taks.

everyone buys a 14 model cause dave has one, or maybe dave buys them because they are nice?
people buy taylors because dave has one, or dave buys taylors because they sound good?
honestly, HONESTLY, let's look at something here. you seem to resent the man with every fiber of your being, and spend most of your time ripping on him, but yet you are doing it on a dmb fansite which is dedicated to learning songs that you hate to perfection. why???? it's certainly not for our educational benefit. you could use all of your bitter energy for something way more productive...like form a band and get popular, and then denounce taylor and watch their sales plummet.
