You can play them upright. Eric Clapton uses a dobro (in an open tuning) on the unplugged album. Check out Running on Faith, Walkin' Blues, Rollin & Tumblin on that album to get a feel for the sound.
I think Fender makes a steel guitar that is only a couple of hundred bucks, that might sound quite alike.
I'm looking for something in an after-dinner guitar....
