That's exciting. What builder are you going with? Or are you literally building your own?
i am building it myself for the most part, but i'm having the tricky stuff (like the top and back joining and the rossette inlay, fingerboard radiusing and slotting, side and binding bending and truss rod routing) done at a shop. I'm doing everything else myself, and im gonna be absolutely compulsive about it. I'm really looking forward to it, im just still deciding on a topwood, i cant decide between sitka spruce and cedar...

im fucking psyched though
I would be too. That, to me, is more exciting than getting a DM3MD ;)

I'd go with cedar. I love that topwood. So warm. How much is this venture gonna cost ya?

I can't wait til I can have a guitar made to my specifications. What are your specs?

Ya, go with the cedar. I have a taylor 714 and that thing rocks. I've played a 714 with a spruce top and it's just not the same... Anyway, as arogant as your post may have sounded, congrats.

40,000 dollars. when people say grand they mean a thousand.

I know the guitar isnt that much but I know its a crap load I was exaggerating the price.

aw me no mean to be arrogant...

shane: I'm so glad you asked for the specs, ive been stewing on them for months and someone finally asked me

okay here we go:

Dreadnought with a venetian cutaway
Western Red Cedar Top
Solid Mahoghany Back and Sides (I'm gonna see if i can get a 3 piece back)
Mahoghany martin style and scale neck (dovetail not bolt on)
Ebony fretboard, bridge and peghead veneer
Koa solid wood single ring rossette
Solid wood quilted maple binding on body fretboard and peghead and quilted maple backstrip
Spruce scalloped braces
The cheapest non-plastic saddle, nut, bridge and end pins I can find
I'm still deciding between stainless steel and nickel frets, the only bad thing I can find about the stainless steel is that they are "too bright" and i dont think thats a problem.
Inverted reverse purfling
Mahoghany end and tailblocks
Gold waverly tuners with ebony tuner buttons
Double adjusting truss rod
ahem.... NO: plastic or inlays. im a simple man.

I think that about covers it...

I'm gonna try and pul it off for about 5 or 6 hundred, it would be a little cheaper, but i need some tools, namely binding routing bits and some special clamps.

Congratulations. I am somewhat jealous. I'd like to play one, but I wouldn't ever buy one, especially if it has someone elses name on it.

If you're going for that price, try to hold off the quilted maple binding. Honestly, you're not gonna notice a whole lot of texture for just the binding. Of course, you've probably researched and would know if there is a significant price difference for something as minuscule as binding.

Since this is your first guitar, I would recommend going for simple. Again, with that backstrip, depending on the size (when you said it, I invisioned it as the Taylor 2004 limited models with the pretty thin backstrip), will probably be completely non-determinant in the sound, and may just cause complications in a procedure you're inexperienced in.

I don't know what you meant by inverted reverse purfling. Are you talking about the black/white/black type thing?

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Ok:

As far as binding is concerned, the price difference is actually not that much and its really important for me to have it all solid wood. Its gonna be about 20 for quilted maple as opposed to 10 or 12 for plastic, which is definetly worth it to me.

I'm having a shop do the back joining which includes installation of a backstrip, which i am also going to make quilted maple.

I very much mis-spoke with the reverse inverted pufling, i meant KERFING i get them confused all too often... Im using all quilted maple for the purfling and you can see reverse kerfing here:

Image

With all the stuff I'm having done by lmii, its actually going to be a fairly simple project. It will most definetly be time consuming and require alot of diligence and attention to detail, but I'm willing to put that in as a labor of love.

edit: Most of the cost im mad about is not the supplies, im willing to shell out for some good wood, but i have to buy the stupid hollow forms for the top and back that are gonna run me 80 a piece plus 40-50 for some go bars, all for one time use. Not to mention some binding routing bits for my dremel.
