RunsWithBuffalo wrote:Singing with your lips on the mic, or "eating the mic" is bad with any mic really because it messes with the movement of your lips and can really throw off your diction. You will get much better results by standing back an inch or two. That way if you need a part louder you can always move in, and if you need it quieter move away. The point is give yourself space on both ends, that way you can really work the mic. I kinda think of a mic as an instrument and there are certainly good and bad ways to play it.
Maybe I shouldn't have said sing with my lips on the mic, but I do tend to touch them inbetween verses and such to get a reference point for distance. Like you said, in the past I did used to sing a lot closer, and it sounds muffled, you definately lose the highs. Thanks for the advice though.

so i'm topping an old thread of mine because I never broke down and bought anything...

I've been reading about the Sennheiser E-835S. Most of the reviews seem to indicate it's a better buy then the SM58. ( I do like that it has a flat grill and it's frequency response is better). Opinions, experience?

Again, I'll be using it primarily as a stage mic for lead vocals. We play Phish/Dave/Allman Bros ish stuff to give you an idea of style.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

It looks good, i have no real experience with it though. It looks comparable to a 58 and you say it has a better frequency response so i see no reason not to get it. My only concern would be build quality. With a 58 you can pound a nail through the grill and it will still work. I have dropped mine numerous times as is going to happen with mic's. So if you think the build is good, i'd say it a no brainer. A lot of the 58's popularity has to do with tradition, but there are a lot of great mic companies out there today, sensenheiser being one of them.

It looks like a pretty solid mic to me. Got good reviews at MF other than the guy that gave it 5's across the board. But I usually chalk the lowest review(s) of products up to user error/inexperience, and likewise with the highest, rave reviews. There are some products that blow you away and you don't have anything negative to say, but you can usually say "I wish it did..." at least one thing.

I swear by my SM58, but this looks like a good buy too.

I doubt build quality should be a concern on it. It's internally shockmounted and it carries a 10 year warranty. Both are good things. The response is good, and Sennheiser makes quality stuff.

I'm not going to say you could send a bomb off by it and have it still be in spec like you can a 57 or 58, but it should be more than adequate for what you need.

Just by the way, I've seen a 58 fall about 45 feet from theatre scaffolding, land on the capsule, and have the FOH guy pick it up and snap it into the clip. I noticed no problems from it. Incredible stuff.

Yeah I use a 57 and a 58 to record with because they really dont pick up unwanted noise at all and i can gig with them. If i used a condenser, you would probably hear my neighbors scratching their balls.

so after all that, I bought a SM Beta 57A for 130 plus tax at a local music store. I A/B'd and there was no question I liked the 57 more. The hotter pickup will be sweet for my needs and well, I just plain old liked what I was hearing. Though I liked what I read about the Sennheiser model, not being able to hear it (no one around me stocks them) was too big of a a drawback to take the chance. Thanks all for your help. I'll let you know how things go, we've got our first live gig in two weeks with the new mic.

We played our first show with the new mic this past Saturday night and wow, I'm really damn happy with my purchase. Thanks everyone for your help. I might have a video coming up soon so I'll post a link if I get one so you can hear the vocals. I can't tell you how many people told me we had the clearest vocals of the four bands that night.
