I have 2 Chet Atkins SSTs. They sound unbelievable plugged in, no feedback etc.Kahn wrote:people's personal differences about sound and guitar vary so much. I cant stand Taylors, while others love them. Oh well, whatever floats your boat, but don't buy one because Dave has one. That's lilke buying a black Chet Atkins, why would you ever want that guitar?

Okay, let's cut the bickering. I think it's clear that the reason people were asking why he wanted a Taylor wasn't to ridicule him for just wanting something he saw Dave play (making the big assumption that that's the case), it was to ensure that the OP knows that there are numerous choices out there, and many are more cost-effective than Taylors or Martins.
To the OP: is this your first "real" guitar? What style of music will you be playing on it? Have you tried out any guitars in this price range at guitar stores? If so, what were your thoughts on the various ones you tried? If you haven't, I recommend that you do that ASAP! What's gold to me may sound like shit to you, and it's only your opinion that matters. I do strongly recommend that you look at more guitars than just Taylors, if only for comparison shopping's sake.

At my local guitar shop they have a fall limited taylor made of solid koa. It's only $1800 as opposed to the $3000 plus you might normally pay. I think it was a 300 series but the details escape me. Needless to say this guitar sounded beautiful. It was impossible to make a bad sound come out of this. Might be something for you to look into.

(Sorry if I came off as a dick in my first post.) While Deans are perfectly fine, a Taylor will definetly be a huge step in the right direction. If you can afford one, and feel that the quality would be worth the money, which IMHO it is, then go for it! Let us know when you get whatever you decide on.
EDIT: Also, I think someone already said this, but *please* do yourself a favor and play some other guitars in your price range. Martin and Larrivee are two KICKASS brands with many guitars comparable to Taylor. You may also find a Takamine that you love. Good luck!

I asked him because it was obvious he doesn't know the sound differences, cost differences, comparisons, etc....bbatsell wrote:Okay, let's cut the bickering. rather than ridicule I wanted to knwo the selling point for him.

Good stuff. see, you're already ahead of most people. atleast you've played it. and if it felt right, and was the sound you want, then awesome.firedancer015 wrote:I have only played my uncles once, but i instantly fell in love. Yeah i do play in a band. I have heard that martins are really sweet too.
Martins are great, but the general consensus is that hey are better solo, amazing bassy sound, I LOVE martins, but they dont cut through a band as well.
Taylors have an amzing all around sound. they can cut through a band a little more and project very well. I perosnally dont like the feel of the taylors i;ve tried (BTW, Jayme, while i was waiting for you to get off work I strumemd on yours, nice, but just doesnt feel right in my hands) but martins feel like butter.
If you like the taylor feel, you like the sound, you play in a full band, hey, good choice. a lot of peopl are taylor/martin haters because they think you can get a better bang for your buck (which is very true), but just cause a larivee for te same price might sound better, doesnt mean it willl feel better or suite your specific taste better.
play more guitars, look at teh 400 line, enjoy. and if you get a chance play a Koa taylor, they sound like shit.

I think the best advice anyone could give you is go the guitar store, avoid the salesperson, and sit down for an hour or two and play as many guitars as you can that are in your price range. Limit them down to 2-4 guitars that you really like and then come back another day and play them again and then make your decision.
agreed. and one of the best things someone said here was when you do narrow it down to 2 or 3 guitars, have a friend who plays similar to you play each guitar in a random order with your back to him so you dont know which guitar is which.mlb1399 wrote:I think the best advice anyone could give you is go the guitar store, avoid the salesperson, and sit down for an hour or two and play as many guitars as you can that are in your price range. When there arent other factors, you might be suprised which you liek most.
I own 314ce with an expression system. I like it, but if i were you, i wouldnt by a taylor. they are great guitars, same with martin, but if you want quality, get a Crafter. They are ALL personnally handmade in Korea. they are also cheaper and i almost like the sound better from them. Basically, if i could, i would take my taylor back and trade it in for a Crafter.
(Also, I would suggest a Tacoma, they are VERY outstanding guitars)

I'm not nearly as expericenced as many people here, so about a month ago when I was shopping for a guitar I took their advice and went to GC(and others) and played some. I touched all of them and I loved the sound of the Taylors. I'm glad I took their advice and played a few since a Taylor isn't cheap and you don't want to be thinking "should I have gotten that Martin" every time you play it.
I knew someone who bought some guitar I'd never heard of... Gretsch or something like that. Nice guitar but smelled like cat piss. My 410ce with Ovangkol back and sides and Sitka Spruce top smells rad. (I'm not gay)

Gretsch makes some sweet electric guitars. I don't know much about their acoustics other than I've never seen one i'd pay for.IvoryZion wrote:I'm not nearly as expericenced as many people here, so about a month ago when I was shopping for a guitar I took their advice and went to GC(and others) and played some.
