i can get a 100 dollar fender bass to sound better than any guitar through an octave pedal. it's just the nature of it. effects are gross and cheesy.
speak for yourself.
Effects can be beautiful and can be unlimitedly expressive, so stop being a big lame naturalist and putting down everyone in this thread (who all use effects).
I assure you, if done well, effects won't be cheesy.
Maybe you just havent learned how to work them well enough...

My mistake. I shouldn't have said effects in general. Octavers are just hard to get to sound good period, if at all. Some effects can be used very well (compression, eq) so I was wrong to say that. Name some octave pedals that I should try out that you think are better than a bass straight into a bass amp. I have owned an octave pedal, and it didn't do anything for me. It sounded like a guitar played through an octave pedal, doing something it wasn't meant to do (be a bass guitar). But, if you name an octave pedal, and I try it, and it makes an acoustic guitar through a guitar amp sound better than a stock fender bass played through a bass amp, i'll eat my words.

well, my statement wasnt about octave pedals, because ive never used one before, so, i cant reccomend..
glad that we can agree and not turn this into a big effect argument.
i THOUGHT you were condemning all sorts of effects.
My advice tho, for octave pedals, is check out the gear of proffessionals you like... they dont always have unnaturally expensive stuff.. and they almost always point you in the right direction. (Copied trey for my distortion, wah, copied timmy for my delay, copied scofield for my chorus...etc.)
Do you know of any proffessional bassists that use octave pedals live?

Like i said, go to Howie Day's website and watch the "sorry so sorry" video. He does a quick bass line at the end using his takamine acoustic and it sounds fine (and it was the boss bass pedal...). He made it sound good. Tomorrow im going to the Guitar Center in atlanta (the good one my lenox square), if anyone wants to hang out and jam i'll be there around noon...

If you just want something to play around with and dont have 120 bucks for a boss, i got one for 25 that works alright. Its called a MOC-1 made by Arion. I figured you couldnt go wrong for 25 and so far it seems to do the trick.
Here is a sample of what it sounds like...I tried to do the outro to so sorry but i did this in about ten minutes. The bass kicks in at 46 seconds

Good luck, Howie's stuff is fun to play, keep at it

Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?
