What is phantom power? and why is it so important for condenser mic's?

Condenser mics will not function unless they're plugged into something with phantom power. I distinctly remember when I first started doing sound work at my church, we have this AKG condenser mic, very good mic, and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Phantom power switch, duh. I now am well versed in our church's sound system, needless to say. :thumbsup:

I have the M-Audio Mobile Pre USB. I'm using it on a iMac with OSX 10.4.3 in GarageBand and i've not had any problems with it.

Well, the MobilePre USB is on it's way. I'll have it Wednesday, and will probably have recordings up in the "Recording" forum within the following week. If there's anything else you guys could tell me about the MobilePre USB, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again. :thumbsup:
