i know how to fix this.
had the same problem while trying to record from a stereo line in.
go to your windows volume control in the task bar. go to options, and choose properties. NOW, there is a choice for playback, and a choice for RECORDING. pick recording. now, the window will change and you will have a bunch of those volume sliders, and a box under each that says "select"
put the check in LINE IN instead of microphone.
i went absolutely crazy before i figured this one out. it's one of those lovely features of windows that is very well hidden for no good reason.

I would guess SiS, as that looks like onboard audio. With regards to Jay's suggestion, yes that's what you do when you're ready to record, but i'm just trying to get the guitar to even play over the damn speakers.cave_cricket wrote:i ahve 2 devices that i can use to record with
SiS 7012 Wave
or
Wave Mapper
which would i use..could that have something to do with it....?
hey cave, if it is still not working, it is definately your adaptor. i've had three different adapters (all just old ones i found around my house) and only one of them works for my guitar. i can check tonight on what kind of adapter i am using.
if that is not the case, and none of this other stuff works, then i think you should just use the mic.

i went absolutely crazy before i figured this one out. it's one of those lovely features of windows that is very well hidden for no good reason.I think that you have to adjust something in Cool Edit to get it to work.
where's Xoosh when you need him....he seems to know quite a bit when it comes to Cool Edit....

what i meant when i said that it was the adapter is that it is not the right kind. i can check what i have at home but that would be my guess. i know i had a stereo to stereo one that did not work at all.
i have a cord that is actually made as 1/8" stereo patch. so i need the adapter to plug into my 1/4" guitar output that shrinks it down to the 1/8" and then goes along the thinner stereo wire to the 1/8" plug at the other end. and i just plug this cord straight into my computer. this has always worked for me. i think your adapter does stereo to mono instead of mono to stereo. maybe you will need a mono to mono. and again, i'll check and see how mine is designed tonight when i get home, but i am pretty sure it is a mono to stereo design.
do you understand what i am saying. cuz the computer accepts a stereo input and the guitar has a mono output (this is the most likely situation but there are some guitars that are made with a stereo output. this is the case when one has a mic/pickup system that is mixed externally. but we won't get into that) so i think the problem may be solved in that you need a mono to stereo adapter instead of the stereo to mono one that you currently have.

you guys should be careful going directly into your mic in. i don't think you'll have a problem since it's just your guitars preamp which doesnt boost a whole ton, but you can blow out your sound card if you're not careful. good to see you got the problem fixed though.
