And to actually answer the OP's question, it's because Taylors have a much brighter high-end than Martins, which allows him to cut through the rest of the band. It's the "signature" Taylor sound. Some people love it, some people don't. I think it's clear Dave prefers Martins when he's not in a band situation with other requirements than just how it sounds to him.
If I were him I don't think I would ever put down his DM3MD, that is a sweet guitar
Anyone know why Dave switched to Taylors?

Dave only played his 914 at Benaroya but whatever.
