can these mixer/recorders do things that software and a kickazz sound card can't? i would rather have the layout of cool edit in front of me (with all the track wavs in real time) than just a little LCD screen that shows a few things like time and levels.

this is true fenster, but those products i showcased up there will allow him to do some pre mixing as well, get a good 120 gig harddrive on a custom built PC and your set. then just do some final touches in cool edit and your done, trust me i do tones of film and audio work on PC's, the more you have dont before it goes into the PC and your editing program the less hassle and pain in the ass problems will occur.
