for your price range I would look into Takamine's. Lots of people stand by them and they DO sound pretty good.
The 000X1 and Dx1k are slightly different because of wood...I want to check those out.
Yeah I have a friend with a takamine, but he doesn't like them anymore..however I'm open to checking those out. I was only looking at martin because I hear they produce nice bass, while still having good midrange.
I'm still a little concerned about the neck..But a solid neck is probably out of my price range..I'm sure martin would cover it though as long as it was their defects.

I've played all 3 DX modles from martin. Even though they are laminated back& sides, you do notice a difference with the tone. The koa and rosewood modles sound mouch better than the mahogony version. The koa is warm and midrangy, while the rosewood is deeper and richer.
As well, the mahagony version is made in Mexico, while the other two are made in the US.
Hope that helps!

Oh nice..the one with the rosewood. Does that one not have markings on the fret board either? I noticed it on the pictures of the DX1K

The Martin DX1 is great. I just bought one as my first real nice guitar. I had a Jasmine by Takamine before and it was good, and worth what it cost but the sound and the fingering on the Martin are fantastic. You're right the DX1 doesn't have fret markers on the top but it does have little dots on the side which are just as easy to pick up on. I got my American-made DX1 from GuitarCenter.com and it was $499 with a gig bag and strap. Couldn't beat that value since the DX1 in the Guitar Center stores near me were $549 and were the made in Mexico ones.

oh nice. I haven't been able to find out where the DX1K is made..I like it for the wood, and the look -- the guitar center near me will have to order it if I want it from them.
Thanks for your opinion..sounds pretty good.
