I think one thing to consider about Taylors is that for acoustic/electrics their expression system is pretty popular and a lot less conspicuous. Taylors are usually described as "bright", which maybe is what you're looking for in a "crisp" guitar?
For straight up acoustic, all around best tone quality though, I like Martins. I do think that they're more expensive (like 10% more) in comparable categories.
Like everyone will probably tell you and like any similar thread you'll find here, it completely depends on taste. You need to visit a good guitar store and play as many as you can stand.

Consider this. If you play alone a lot and want a guitar that will fill up the room, get a martin. If you play in a band a lot and want to cut through the noise, get a taylor.
My personal preference is for Martins because i think it still works ok in a band setting, whereas the taylor just does not cut it solo.

I'm pretty partial as a Larrivee owner, but I do feel that Larrivee blends the "typical" sounds of Martin and Taylor to create their own tone, so there is another option for you to explore. You'll probably pay a little less for Larrivee, too.

Take the advice Max gave you. Just play as many as you can and just buy the one that sounds best to you. You might prefer one brand over another, just because Kahn doesn't like a Taylor does'nt mean you won't. I like both Taylor and Martins, but I prefer the Taylor sound.

thank you for your feedback guys... i spent 3 hours at Guitar Center Saturday, after about a month and a half of researchin' online.
I played sitting, standing, acoustic, amped...and finally made a decision..
i went for the Taylor 414CE... I love it!! played it for the first time at a gig on saturday night..so i broke it right in!
I love the sound... like night and day compared to my Tak. I'll just use my Tak for alternate tuning, which will be convenient for gigs, considering it still sounds okay.
Thanks again for the feedback.
I also picked up the 714CE...except that was double the price of the one i got...but damn, it's amazing!!

Congrats on the guitar.
Did you buy it at the GC near BU?
If so, I probably played your 414ce... I bought a 12 string last Sunday, and played a bunch of the fancy guitars too. Played that $6400 Martin.

Good choice on the 414, I love ovankol, its cool looking, sounds better than their mohagany and really does sound similiar to rosewood for half the price.
Have fun!
