Whit, i dont wanna sound like a salesman here, but really, at least try some brand new larrivees before you make your mind. Check my thread on mine, I think you'd like something like that, maybe without the Cutaway. Larrivees are a lot of "bang for the buck" IMHO.

EDIT: or my blog, easier to find than the thread.

lift weights, they weigh less than a jr bacon cheeseburger

An onboard Eq can be very helpful if you have to be your own soundman and you are playing in different types of venues. Also an onboard tuner is gold. But to each his own or her own. I agree that i dont like the look of them, but sound is infinitely more important than looks.
i think its a psychological block. if one of those fucking things is embedded in the side of a guitar it sounds so shallow to me.

if i ever get a new guitar i would get one with just a pickup and endpin jack, no preamp or anything on it
i dont like having a eq onboard on my guitar, its kind of ugly, not to mention onboard eq's suck balls

larrivee's are gay, you're better off buying a guitar from Esteban, if they were worth a damn, then famous musicians would play them, the several i've played and heard were nothing special

get a Taylor 714ce or a Takamine TAN16C with the cool tube preamp

i don't know if you listen to Howie Day, but he plays on a Takamine with the cool tube and those things just sound really really good

Honorable Mentions:

Breedlove AC25
Gibson Songwriter Deluxe with Cutaway

all of which i mentioned are quite pricey, but you said you started on a Martin, Martin makes some awesome and very very expensive guitars, i'm assuming you had a more base model, but still, also since it's a birthday and christmas present, go all out!

go with acoustic-electric, it's the best of both worlds! and don't forget to buy a feedback buster, they're worth every penny

That is fine. You stick to Esteban guitars, more Larrivees for me.
get a Taylor 714ce or a Takamine TAN16C with the cool tube preamp
Oooo cause Dave has one?
i don't know if you listen to Howie Day, but he plays on a Takamine with the cool tube and those things just sound really really good
Are you seriously retarded. Howie Day is a clown. If you knew anything about anything, you would know that Larrivee's superiority is fact, not opinion. They only use the highest quality solid woods while the other, well, I don't even wanna get started on laminates.

This is laughable. Even the all-mighty Martin uses laminates on their entry level guitars. Now you are right though. The company that uses all high quality solid Canadian woods, even on their cheapest and lowest model, sucks. Go buy a Taylor and finger your ass to DMB posters fagmo.

I have that guitar and the onboard eq is amazing. The guitar has a beautiful sound and as soon as i played it i fell in love with it. i searched for about two months and as soon as i played that guitar i bought it.

but i do agree to buy the best guitar you can, and then add electronics. you will be able to get a much better guitar for your money.

ps i got that taylor because it has such a powerful tone. the bass is amazing.

The best thing to do is to keep playing as many guitars as you can. Play them without even looking at the price tag. You might prefer the Taylor 314 over a 714. When you find one you like then take a look and see if it is in you price range. Just because a guitar is more expensive than another it doesn't mean it sounds better, you might prefer the less expensive one.
