I would definetly make sure to play open chords along with high barres.

also play some notes up on the highest fret you can, play every fret on every string to make sure nothing buzzzes

i find i can ussually tell if a guitar has a good sound, or if its tuned perfectly, by playing damien rices cannonball. if the guitar is of good quality that song RESONATES so beautifully.

that sounds like a cool idea. i know for a fact that i never have an open mind. i go into the store thinking which guitars are good, so when i play them i always think they are better than another guitar, no matter what. it shouldnt be that way. what some people like others dont so be open minded. you might find you like the sounds of a beater better than a taylor? (i hope that doesnt happen, but it might). good luck
