Recording help

Unread post by jbilly » Fri Mar 10, 2006 9:23 pm

Do I need a mic preamp if I record straight into a boss 8 track digital recorder? How good are the preamps on cheaper mixers like berringer? Should I get the Rode nt1 or save another 100 bucks for the AT 4040?

If your Boss has phantom power, then you probably can go straight into it. Mic Preamps are great for control though and i highly recommend getting a tube preamp, they really warm up vocals. Also, some of them do compression which is great, but those are typically pretty expensive. If youre going to use any of the Rode mics you will need phantom power.

I have never tried the AT4040 but the NT1 is a great quiet mic and its only 199 for very high quality.

I currently use the cheapest behringer mixer (39.99) it works pretty well and has phantom power, but looking back I should have invested in a nice mic pre amp

Check out recording.org, they have tons of advice on this stuff and a lot of it comes from proffessionals, not just hacks like us.

Good luck
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?
