Opinions of Seagull Model

I was at a local music store here in State College over the weekend and officially started my "I'm buying a new guitar adventure" Basically I am concentrating on three shops at home and one or two up here. Anyway I played a Seagull S Series - S6+ CW Cedar GT QII and was very impressed. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this model/seagulls in general. My main concern on this guitar is the lack of heavy duty finish since I will be gigging with this axe. Also, I can score this thing brand new with an extremely small cosmetic blemish for 600 bones with a hard case and lifetime warranty. To me it seems to be a very reasonable alternative to much higher priced brands with very comparable benefits (and of course I am on a college budget). Thanks for any input!

Another concern of mine is the cedar top. I like the look and sound but have heard stories of damage since it's softer than spruce.

I love the S6, but I think 600 with a blemish is too much. From what I remember, that's the price of a new one without a blemish.

all the searching i did online came up with higher prices. keep in mind it has a cutaway and electronics, but you could be right.

ah sorry, i was thinking of the bare s6 with no electronics. don't know the price of the one you're talking about. but again, i love the s6. i think it's a great guitar and would love to have one.

I have an M6 spruce and i love it....its my beater guitar now though :oops:

thanks for the input guys. anyone else have something to add? I know Seagull is regarded as a solid company for the most part and their guitars are no frills alternatives to higher priced models, but honestly I don't know many other people who own them, so I am looking for experience if possible. Thanks.

I work @ Long & McQuade music store in Toronto Canada and sell a lot of these guitars. Here's what I can tell you.

-They are made by Godin guitars out of Quebec; they also make Art & Lutherie, Simon & Patrick, Norman, La Patrie & Godin guitars.

-95% Canadian wood, all canadian craftsmanship.

-Solid Cedar Top, Wild Cherry B/S

-A full gloss finsih does not allow the wood to vibrate as much, so the matte finish back/sides help give a little sonic boost. The GT helps to prevent scratches and dents on the soft cedar top.

-Seagulls have a wider neck and a tapered headstock. The headstock is supposed to keep the guitar in tune better becuase the strings form a straighter line to the machine heads vs. a regular headstock.

-Quantum II p/u is decent, the mic adds a lot of warmth and realism to your recordings but will give you feedback if you have a monitor pointed at you during a gig.

-We sell them for $695 Can. with a Fort "Tric" case.

Thanks man. With your experience, would you reccomend any one model over another? I'm looking for something that I can play Dave and Dave style stuff on but still play fingerpicking and slaps and rythimic flatpicking.

I can't really recomend one model over another, becuase everyone has their own preference on the sound they want. You can play "Dave" on any guitar and it will still sound like "Dave" music.

-Cedar tops will give you a warmer more mellow sound.
-Spruce tops will give you a brighter more crisp sound.

Dave's taylors that he currently uses with the band all have spruce tops & rosewood b/s. However, he used to use a 714 which was cedar/rosewood.

The only suggestion I have would be to play as many different guitars as you can to try and figure out the sound that your looking for. At least this way you will learn what you don't like.
