Stupid Question: Footswitch

This is probably a really stupid question, but I have no idea what a footswitch really is. I've heard of it but never really knew what it was or did. Could someone explain to me what it is?

sometimes they connect to your amp to control different settings/effects/distortions. or on a certain type of effect u might has it probably has a foot switch on it. so u can keep playing and switch/turn on/off something.
