martin DX-1

Unread post by waffle_house_jam » Sun Dec 22, 2002 1:37 pm

i was at a guitar shop recently, drooling at a large rack of martins. i picked one up to play, and after jamming for a bit i noticed two things: 1, the back of the guitar felt a little odd, and 2, the price was surprising-about 650 bucks. when i asked about the guitar, the shop guy said it was a fairly new line, which is solid spruce top but composite wood on the back. it was a dreadnought, and it sounded and played awesome, so im considering buying it....
just wanted to know if anybody knew about this sort of guitar and whether you think its worth buying....
thanks

if you're paying that much. Get the d15 .. i can get them for $599 and i think they sound phenominally better... however if you're a fan of the composit wood... i'd suggest the 000-CX1 or whatever it is... i can get those for 579... with electronics. its the solid black composit wood guitar.

I was at my sister's house the other day, and she just whipped out this huge box and said, "Here." Inside was a Martin DX-1 Dreadnought as an early Christmas present. This is a definite improvement over my low-end Ovation Celebrity I had before, but this is also only my second guitar and I don't know much about guitars in general. I love it, but I'd take Xoosh's word, he probably knows better than I do.

I bought my DX1 for just under 400, it's a sweet sounding guitar for the money. I have a buddy that's played electric and acoustic for the past 15 years, the first time he picked it up and played it it took me an hour to get it out of his hands. The guitar can sing. I would recommend it to anyone.....but I wouldn't pay 700 for it.

peace

I actually bought it from Ebay. I wouldn't recommend buying a guitar off of ebay unless you do at least the following.
1)Check user ratings for feedback
2)Use paypal or a Credit Card
3) Buy from a dealer

I got lucky the guitar wasn't new, there was a scratch on the head stock. Came with original ppwk receipts warranty etc. Plus I was totally surprised to find a free gig bag included.
Just be careful you never can be 100% sure what you end up with

I did at first too, I was originally going to get the 28 but this one hd-35 just kicked me in the butt...the 35 has so much jump with the lighter bracing...just blows me away...spend a lot of time side by side with the two guitars before you make a decision...I was at the store almost every day for about a month playing the guitars before I finally jumped...

I'll try to make this as short as possible:

I got a Taylor Big Baby...loved the sound (mid to high range). It wasn't bassy enough for me. I also felt like I would destroy it soon. Very light, no bracing in the guitar at all.

I played a DX-1 at guitar center and liked it a lot. It weighed on me and I finally went back to get it (2 days later). It was sold!

So, I decided to go one higher and play the Martin DM. Nice guitar. Guitar Center said they wouldn't match this competitor's price since they weren't authorized Martin dealers, but they'd meet me halfway. Fair enough, because I want that lifetime warranty.

I called the 'so-called' unauthorized dealer and they laughed and said, of course they were authorized. I called Guitar Center back and they told me they'd refund me the difference and they'd match the other price.

I told them to keep my money and give me the Martin D-15 I fell in love with.

I got the D-15 and a Martin hardcase for $599. The Martin site says $979. Never pay that.

I'd highly suggest checking out the D-15 for that price range. Unique look, too. I don't know where you live, but if you have a Guitar Center near you, I can send you the link where you can print the online competitor's price, take it to GC and they'll match it.
Peace,

Stunt

Martin X Series

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Sat Dec 28, 2002 1:00 am

I've played the Martin X Series someone had mentioned earlier...personally I dont think the composite resonates as well as the solid body guitars. On a different note, the black models almost look plastic, I didn't like it but you may. I settled on for a Takamine EF341SCX, its a solid body guitar, plus you have the option of which electronics you have installed. The guitar itself was $550, the electronics can add anywhere from $150 to .......

I'm VERY happy with the purchase!
