--->I'VE FINALLY NARROWED IT DOWN!!!!!! *APPLAUSE*

Unread post by sticksANDstrings » Tue Sep 23, 2003 9:55 am

I've decided to either go with a Martin D-35 ($1449), a Martin HD-35($1879), or a Taylor 810E (no cutaway, expression system electronics). I have a few questions that you guys can hopefully fill me in on.

1) Is the HD-35 worth the extra $400? (If Timmy Reynolds plays a regular D-35 I would think its a solid guitar)
2) What does a three-piece back do to the sound quality of a guitar?
3 and most importantly) All things considered, what is the best value?

I promise if you guys help me then I'll shut my ass up. Thanks a lot guys.

One more thing. What are the other differences between the D-35 and the HD-35 besides the Herringbone inlay, the tortoise pickguard, and the thinner/scalloped bracing?

1) HD-35 is better than the D-35.
2) 3 pieces sound no better than 2 pieces. its cosmetic
3) Thats for you to decide

There any chance you can get to a guitar store to play these three? That's the only way for you to decide.

I know I'm contradicting myself by saying "don't listen to what other people say - play them for yourself", but what the hell.

I dislike the D-35, I find it too have too much bass for my liking, and not enough treble. Of the dozens of times visiting guitar center I've picked up the D-35 practically every visit and have just acquired a distaste for it. The HD-35, however, fits nicely. It is definitely more balanced, my guess would be because of the bracing. I usually play the revoiced 810s as well, but still lack in bass compared to their Martin counterparts. Just a preference there. It would be a tough choice between the HD35 and the 810....both have great highs, the Martin just carries more boom for my liking.

That said, I truly hope my choices don't influence yours. Forget about the names, forget about the cost(if you can), forget about the looks, close your eyes and just play.. your choice will rise relatively quickly...

I agree with other people that the best way is to play all three. However, I would suggest that you pose this quesion on the Martin Guitar and Taylor Fourm. The people on these boards know 100 times more that we ever will about individual models, the good and bad about them. They will help you out the most.
