Should I just put on light-gauge (.010-.046) and not worry about it?

Yes, go ahead, you'll have no problems.

No, you're going to run into problems unless you adjust your setup.

Electric String Gauge Switch?

Unread post by t41 » Mon Oct 31, 2005 8:28 am

I have a question regarding string gauges on an electric guitar (Danelectro 56 Pro): I am not sure what the equipped gauge is on the guitar. They feel like electric lights (.010-.046), but there's a chance that they are extra-lights. There was no documentation on this that came with the guitar, and Music123 where I ordered it, and the manufacturer site does not have any specific information of string gauge/brand. When it is time to change strings, will I have to do any adjustments to the setup to accomodate electric light gauge strings? I prefer them to extra-lights (based on playing frequently on a Fender Strat).

I know with acoustic guitars, it is necessary to stay with lights if your guitar is equipped for them, otherwise it will require a setup change to accomodate mediums. Are the risks the same with the average solidbody electric guitar? Perhaps this has become a series of questions rather than just one, but I want to keep my guitar in prime shape and not have intonation problems just because I switched to the wrong set of strings. Also, the bridge is adjustable and does not have the same potential lifting issues as can happen with an equivalent strat design. The strings go through the bridge and not through the body.
