i think that no matter what, if you dip below that $2k line you are going to be downgrading a level in guitars.

I know its not a dread but

What about buying used?

i just cant understand, a hd28v is all i would ever need. and by the description of sound that you are trying to get, it seems the martin would be ideal.

good luck on your hunt, 1800 is enough to get a slamming axe

i still might end up with a HD-28V. Thing is, the one that was shipped to me had markings on the wood, and even a spec of dirt under the gloss. For $2200 and the premium wood that is used on the vintage series, i wanted a cleaner nicer cut of wood. so regardless ive sent back this specific model. Problem is that was the last one at the old price of 2190. martin has recently upped their list price, and the cheapest i can get one now is 2280. so now we are talking 2300 on a guitar, which leaves me broke....so im now taking this opportunity to see if i can find something great and still have some money to live...

its just that you can get that value out of the guitar at a lower price, and in a way, it's almost nicer gettign used cause you get to know what it's going to sound like after it's broken in.
My alvarez has kind of lost its tone since I got it new 1 year ago. it still sounds good, but not neaqrly as nice as it first did.

i think right now im either going to save some more money and get a different HD-28V or look into a Larrivee D-09 and D-60. Regardless i will go play them soon.

i dont see why not get a used. if you know how to take care of a guitar, dont play it at a party when your hammered, dont run it over with your car, then i dont see why pay 700 dollars more for a warranty. i mean im getting a 2001 hd-28v brand new condition for 1500, and the most im worrying about with it is maybe leveling the frets (if it needs it) and getting it setup and all that costing 80 bucks. search around ebay, very good deals, last week there was a brand new hd-28 with warranty for 1700.

that's a hell of a deal. you should be able to buy insurance for guitars this expensive.

you can get insurance for anything, including guitars.

a neck reset can cost like $300-$400. if you need that in 5 years or so. Its free with a warranty. You need it once, warranty is paid off and that doesnt include anything else that would happen to it over the years.

no, im still waiting for my credit card to get the $2190 from the HD-28V back on it before i can do anything.

Ive decided i dont want to mail order a guitar sight unseen again - too much risk for my small wallet. Sam Ash said they will order a Larrivee D-60 for me if i put down a refundable 20%. This way i can A/B it to some martins. Plus i think i can get them to match BUffalo Brothers quote of $1750 for it.

Tax on it will be around $150 so total of $1900 for a top of the line Larrivee Dread.

The cheapest i can get an HD-28V now is $2280 - and that is site unseen. if i got it with tax (meaning bought in person) it would be around $2500. So there is a BIG savings (500-600).

Ive thought about the D-09 for around 1500 or so, but i think the D-60 is a little lounder and projects better with their version of foward shifted bracing. Guy at Buffalo Brothers, when i told him i havent been able to A/B the d-60 to a martin Hd-28 told me to hold on and did it himself for curiosity, telling me he thought the 28 would blow it away. He came back 5 mins later and was surprised that the D-60 held up very well against it. was this a sales pitch knowing i wouldnt spend the money on the martin? who knows...

im in SD and i went up to buffalo brothers and i really liked the d-60 larivee sounded better than the hd-28, but i dont like the abolone inlay on the rosette. i thought the hd-28v sounded better than both though
