electric guitar vs. new bass amp

ok there was a small discussion about this going on in the random post thread, i decided to get more info on this. which way should i go, i really wanna start playing some more electric guitar stuff like, red hot chili peppers, dreamtheater, prince, and such. but i also only have a crate BX-15 and i really need to upgrade. so which one should i get first. the whole reason why im really considering an electric first is because im going to be playing rythem guitar in a band, instead of bass. but i think i might need a new amp for jazz band. the thing is the amp would be around like $1,000 and a guitar wouldnt succeed $400. so what do you guys think?

ive never really got a chance to really play electric guitar, and thats like whenever i go to a friends house no one has an acoustic anymore so i never know what to play cause it doesnt have that same feel, and i want to learn more elec. songs. yet still on the other hand i really want a new bass amp to get some better tones to bring out my warwicks sound.

ok so i think im going to get a guitar, i just dont know what i need something cheap i dont really wanna get something expensive.i want something i can play progressive and stuff along those lines(like metal even)(i.e. dream theater, yes, queen, guns and roses, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, and such.) i just dont know what i want, i like the john petrucci sig. alot, but i wouldnt be able to get the ernie ball one id have to get the OLP. my brother told me to get an epi ES, but would that work for what i want to play. im also kind of like explorers. so what would you guys suggest?

stop making fun of me, i dont want one for what im doing right now there good guitars but its just not what i want in this point in life.

EDIT-now im leaning towards a epi dot....

I saw a really nice hollowbody Fender Tele w/ F-holes at my local music store. It was around $600-$700. It played really nice. Try playing something like that and see if you like it.
