Styles: Grand Auditorium vs. Dreadnought

Unread post by CWMCALL » Sun Aug 24, 2003 8:54 pm

I am planning on getting a new guitar soon, I own a dreadnought now but it is a very inexpensive starter guitar....I have not played a Grand Auditorium but it seems to be very popular.

How much different is the sound between the two and what are the goods and bads of both types?

Thanks

i've found that the grand auditorium style has a bit more bass to it... the auditorium style is a little easier to "play out" with. but you need to try a whole bunch of different guitars before you make a decision.

i have no idea how fatjack derived his response but whatever... :)

anyway, ive A/Bed some of the same series dreads/GA's and dreads definately have more bass... (especially the new revoiced dreads... holy crap how awesome are they!)

GA's are more versatile as they work better for fingerstyle then dreads, however dreads are better for strumming - not to say GA's arent, because they are very good, its just that dreads are more for strumming than anything else. although if you fingerpick it wont sound bad at all, it may just sound better from a GA. its all personal preference though. my first Taylor will be a revoiced dread. i love em.

It sorta depends on a few things. For instance, are you playing mostly solo, or mostly with people? If youre playing by yourself, a dred would prob be best cause it has a fuller sound (more bass.) If youre playing in a band, the ga will come through clearer, at least if youre playing a lot of higher notes.

As shane said, if you play fingerstlye a lot, the GA will be clearer than a dred, but if you strum a lot, dreds are the best way to go.

I dont play in a band, and I have a dred. I personally wouldnt buy a GA, cause I'll never be in a serious band and I dont think they sound as good solo as dreds do. But, I dont do a whole lotta fingerpicking right now (though I am getting into it.) Theres my $.02

And dreads project more volume.

If you like using medium strings (as I do, more tone, volume, etc.) then don't get a GA. Lights or lower w/those ones. They can't take the tension on the neck like the Dreds can.

My OM handles my medium gauges. The intonation is perfect.
