Help me chose a guitar to celebrate!

Unread post by marc_roy » Wed Jun 22, 2005 2:23 pm

Just found out I got into med school! So I'm buying a guitar to celebrate. I just sold my 810... I'm really a Martin guy after all!

There are 4 guitars I love, each one more than the other on different days and depending on what I play...
JC-16WE premium, HD-28, D-40 and J-40. I like to fingerpick and strum.

What would you do?

*correction, the hd-28 should read $1850 (2200 can$)

thanks guys... a consensus already! That guitar is nuts. I have never tried the hd-28v... have any of you compared with the regular hd-28 (there is probably a post somewhere). Does the forwarded bracing make a diff?

I have an 28v and love it very much. I choose it over the HD-28 because I prefered the neck. You have to play the V neck to really know how you will like it. very different

Side note-is Roy a last name or does have to do with some by the first name "Patrick"?

to tell you the truth i cant tell a change from d-28, to HD-28 to HD-28v, its all in the bracing paterns thats the difference, sound wise it wont matter allllll that much , if you can tell the diff you have a much better ear than I, but play them you might like one better for some reason.

my last name is Roy... and I actually play in goal. Not as much anymore, but competitively until I left for school.

I agree, the d-28 and hd-28 are identical in the way they play... but I see a difference with the HD's sound... much boomier. I'm surprised no one has picked the D-40! For my skill level (2 years), I'm a sound snob!

I like the V neck, but I can't say I like it more or less than a regular neck. I don't like the Taylor necks... I sold my 810 because of it. Well that and a buzz.

Yea, the V-neck compared to a regular neck, well It didnt bother me. So i just decided to go with the neck Dave had.

i have a question for yall martin enthusiasts.

i went to a GC sometime a few weeks ago when my friend was buying his amp, and decided to check out the acoustic room. they had an HD28v that i was like 'wow... ive gotta try it because of all the hype ive heard'

maybe it was that particular one, but it wasnt boomy at all... not at all like a dread... it even felt tiny... the tone was kinda mellow.. i dunno.. it was weird.

have any of yall thought this about it?

edit: by the way, i didnt vote because id only be voting on aesthetics seeing as how i havent played most of them.

I knew someone would say that (save for school). I probably should, but won't. I figure I was able to graduate without a student debt (bachelors and grad school) and I actually worked a year full time, so I do have some funds to buy it.

I'm sure when I'm done med school the debt will be ~$75G... why not make it $77?

I do think the HDs' sound vary depending on the particular guitar, the room, what you played before and what you play!
