You have to be a little scientific about it too. Think about what the effect is actually doing to the signal. Something like distortion changes the amplitude of the signal. So does the volume. If you change the amplitude of the signal with the volume pedal before it goes into the distortion pedal, your distortion tone will change. If you put the volume last, you are changing the overall level of the signal, characteristics of the signal.

well, the volume in the beginning was a terrible idea w/o a compression pedal cause you don't get full volume into the overdrive pedal, therefore you don't get good distortion unless you turn it all the way up which of course defeats the purpose of the volume pedal. i also noticed more noise when my reverb pedal was in the middle so now it goes guitar>overdrive>delay>reverb>volume. i can still control the volume of the effects and the original signal and i can get as much overdrive as i need and keep the volume low at the end. it's what works best for me. thanks for the help though guys.
