Just ordered my AST+A1. Let y'all know once I got it.

Cool! I'm gonna get the A1 and AST as well. I spoke with a few local shops and they all raved about them too! I'm still torn though. I can get these from a local guy for $115 + tax and have it today, or I can order from http://www.samusic.com/ for $90 and get it when I get it. Anyone know how long shipping from them takes (I'm in CT)?

I may just spend the $115 as the guy was pretty helpful regarding installation. Help out the local guy out + instant gratification, ya know? He did try to come a bit lower on the price for me. Anyway I asked this guy about reaming out the end pin hole and whether I really need a reaming tool or could simply use a drill bit. He mentioned the hole should be 15/36", rather than the 1/2" stated on B-Band's Web site, but didn't give me a definitive answer. Any thoughts here?

I got it! I got it! Anyway, I got out the door for under $140 which included tax, a new set of strings and a ten foot cable. Anyway, I got into a conversation about installation and he said if you're not using a reaming tool and just a drill bit, to start small with the bits and increase one size at a time until you get the desired hole width (15/36") for the end-pin preamp, checking after each pass with the drill. He also talked about installing the AST and battery clip; so getting some first-hand recommendations was probably worth the extra coins I paid.

Keep an eye on the Recording forum and I'll post some new recordings with them once I get it installed.

I have an AST/A1 in my Taylor Big Baby, but when i record to my computer with just the pickup straight into the soundcard, the volume is extremely low....does anyone else have this problem? Do I just need to invest in the L.R. Baggs Acoustic DI in order raise the volume to a listenable level?....or is there something wrong with my pickup?

Are you plugging into Line-in or the Mic jack? If you're plugging into the line-in jack, then you're definitely going to need something like a mixer to boost the volume; many sound cards' mic jacks have an optional +20dB boost that you can enable in the Volume Control; try that.

Installation went pretty well. A few things to consider:

1 - I didn't have a 15/32" drill bit so I drill out the end pin hole to 1/2". It's slightly large and the preamp would probably fit more snugly in a 15/32" hole, but once all the nuts are put on, it's pretty tight.

2 - Take your time installing the transducer and follow the directions carefully. I wiped a little bit of rubbing alcohol on any area I applied something with the adhesive to be sure it sticks well.

3 - Be sure to test it before restringing!!! You can plug it in and tap on the top of the guitar to confirm the signal. I'm sure glad I did as the battery lead worked loose during the preamp installation. If I had new strings on that I had to remove, it would've sucked!

Anyway, take your time, review the directions, and be sure to follow them carefully and you should be fine.

I'll be posting a revamped version of Cry Freedom to the Recording forum later this AM. Let me know how you think the above clip sounds. It's exactly the sound I was looking for.

all i get is static when i plug it into the mic jack, what did you use to record cry freedom that the guitar was so loud?

Cool Edit Pro with the guitar plugged into a 1/4" --> 1/8" reducer direct into the mic port. Check that you are using a mono to mono reducer (not a stereo --> mono reducer). They're like 4 bucks at Radio Shack. Hope this helps...

yayyyyy!!! got my pickup+preamp today (thanks for the quick service john), called my local guitar store and they laughed at me when I asked if they could install it - apparently their tech is scared to touch martins, so i did it myself... it's yummy!

just went to the shack and bought the adapter for my computer, recorded the one sweet world intro on the first take. this was just to give an idea of what the pickup sounds like. i'd been warned that the mahogany of the d-15 hurts the quality of the recording, and you can hear that a little, but not as bad as i expected. anywho, here's the intro:
